Yet another missed chance by the show to fill out the timeline between 1990s and Trek-times. Instead of referencing a coal miner strike or some other implausibly distance ancestor, the story should have been about struggle on a fringe space colony during TOS days before everything got so bland.

Instead they perpetuate the idea that humans stopped needing unions in the early 20th century.

idk i think referencing real events (or close enough to real) has some power to it. maybe some kids in 199whatever went to the library and looked up miner strikes in 1902.

could do both and mention a proud family tradition of it like when they mention two historical figures and a made up guy from "our future", but it's easy to make small improvements to everything.
