Elizabeth Gurley Flynn was born in 1890 in Concord, New Hampshire, to a radical, activist working-class family. When she was 10, the family moved to the South Bronx, where she attended public school. By the time she was 15, Flynn was active in socialist groups. At 15, she gave her first public speech, and the next year she was expelled from high school. She became a full-time organizer for the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW).

In the years leading up to World War I, Flynn was active on women's rights, free speech for IWW speakers and organizing textile strikes in places like Lawrence, Massachusetts, and Paterson, New Jersey. She also worked to organize garment workers in Pennsylvania, silk weavers in New Jersey, restaurant workers in New York City and miners in Minnesota.

Flynn opposed the war when it broke out, and like many war opponents, she was charged with espionage. The charges were dropped and Flynn began working to defend immigrants threatened with deportation for their opposition to the war.

In 1920, Flynn helped found the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and was elected to the national board. From 1927-1930, she chaired International Labor Defense. During that time she was active in trying to free jailed labor organizers Thomas J. Mooney and Warren K. Billings. For the first half of the 1930s, she withdrew from public life because of bad health, but she returned to public life in 1939 and was re-elected to the ACLU board. When Adolf Hitler and Josef Stalin signed a nonagression pact, the ACLU expelled all Communist Party members from its ranks, including Flynn.

Flynn ran for the Communist Party of America's Central Committee successfully, and ran for a seat in Congress unsuccessfully. During World War II, Flynn fought for women's economic equality. After the war, as communism grew more unpopular in the United States, Flynn shifted back to defending free speech rights for radicals. In 1951, she was arrested for conspiracy to overthrow the government based on the Smith Act of 1940. She spent more than two years in prison.

She returned to political action once she was out of prison, and in 1961, she became the first woman elected national chair of the Communist Pary. A critic of the Soviet Union, Flynn traveled behind the Iron Curtain and was stricken ill. She died in the USSR and was given a state funeral in Red Square.

A few days ago when it was raining - a window in my living room started leaking. My landlady has done zilch. I talked to her today face-to-face and she really pissed me off. She said stuff like "What do you want me to do?" In my head I had a filmic reply "Oh, I don't know - fix the fucking leak?" When I was young I wouldn't have used swear words but had a bad temper so I would have been obnoxious. Imagine John Podhoretz loudly complaining about the specifics of his incorrect pastrami sandwich. "Waiter - this is not what I ordered!"

But I lived in Japan and I'm not young anymore so my reply was the very measured "I don't know." and then I made some pregnant pauses. Long story short - my mature technic seems to have worked. An apparently qualified roof guy is apparently coming soon.

Over the last year I've read so much less theory/history/etc than usual. I don't think I finished a single book. In the face of how fucking shit everything is, I just can't seem to bring myself to learn anymore about exactly how shit it is. 20 billion pages of theory and we still live in hell world. So many books being published that I'd like to and likely should read, but I have started to have such contempt for all these authors just rehashing shit for the nth time, or worse, typing out 500 pages of marketing for their new terms. I feel doubly so if they have tenure, and quadruple if it's at a university with ties to Israel (most of them tbh).

Day 4 of my 5 day break from work. 8n those 4 days I have:

  • Gotten blood work done
  • Seen a psychiatrist
  • Gotten groceries
  • Walked an hour to get money order for rent

The rest has just been cooped up inside my apartment. I was supposed to see a friend today but they recommended we cancel due to weather. Tomorrow I'm going to try to go clothes shopping, see Superman, get quarters for laundry, do laundry, and tidy my place up.

I don't think my life has felt so empty and hopeless since I was unemployed

Got my first tip off today that the company is not doing as rosy as presented and cuts may be coming. Can’t fathom being unemployed again, zero savings because everything costs so much now and I only just financially recovered from my last bout of unemployment. Just have to keep going I guess.

Petition to have a wealth tax that’s just the functional unemployment rate times ten.

Time porko started putting people to work.

My kidneys still hurt but they feels way better after drinking water and cranberry juice all weekend. Hoping it's just a mild UTI because I'm going to keep ignoring it unless it gets worse.

There should be a version of that goldbug NATIONAL DEBT website but it counts how much money is owed to indigenous peoples. Like start by just counting up all that property tax since the 1500s. It would be such a huge number, and it wouldn't even scratch the surface

It fucking sucks that I can’t play Victoria 3 or Hearts of Iron 4 on my new laptop. It has 32 GB of RAM but only a crappy integrated graphics card.

socialism-is-when

"Democracy is when the government oppresses people, and the more people it oppresses, the more democratic it is! And when it oppresses a whole lot of people, then it's a direct democracy (like ancient Athens)!"

New saying I just came up with: jokers and chokers.

You can say like "the democrats are a bunch of jokers and chokers." Or something to that effect. Say it about a group you don't think highly of.

Evwr hear someone use a specific brand where its not normal or a generic name when a brand bame is normal and they sound like theyre in a commercial? Like say instead of a rum and coke they order a Bacardi and cola. Isn't that a deeply disturbing thing to observe? I cant totally explain why but it makes me deeply suspicious of that person

I just want to rant about some stupid shit that no one else will appreciate:

There is a YouTube folk singer named Jesse Welles who is fine. I've listened to a few songs but I don't really give that much of a shit. What pisses me off is that he's singing songs about how Palestine is starving and our government loves israel yet in other songs has talked about how Yahya Sinwar just loved war and worshipped it as his God. How are you going to go against the Palestinian genocide but at the same time be mad at the people actually fighting against it?!

Sure I may never have enjoyed a single James Gunn movie, but he seems to be the only guy making comic book movies who actually enjoys comics and wants to do comic book stuff so I gotta give him that.

on days off, I easily start waking up at like 7-730a. like I'll just get up when it feels right and start doing shit, when I realize it's only 7:20a

on workdays, I struggle to get it together at 7:35a. like I get up and do my thing, but it feels too early.

I had an allergy test done and I'm 4++ to all grasses. I'm medically exempt from touching grass.

I also have a level 3 allergy to dogs (I have a dog who sheds a lot), and a level 4 or 3 to all the plants in my area.

My mom is coming to visit me next week for the first time since I moved out of state, so that's YEARS. I'm excited but she is kinda intense... Like, extremely emotionally unstable/aggressive to the point that she can't hold a job and really never has. So I'm kinda nervous. She's also a Trump supporter STILL, even though many of her close friends are undocumented...and I'm gonna be with her for 4 full days. In a cabin. She will typically have a screaming fit at least once when I visit her, but hopefully it'll be different once we are out of her elements.

I feel like nowadays I can have more productive political conversations with her than I used to, but as soon as it seems like I've reached her on some point, it's like she forgets it instantly. I'm hoping she won't poke the bear, but if so I really need to learn how to approach the conversations in a different way. Even when I tell her that I fucking hate Dems and Republicans, and that they're all on the same team, she will kinda agree, but then it all evolves back to the binary, cult of personality thing. Ah well at least she can be good practice for me to stay grounded and try different tactics, and if she flies off the handle I'll have my car to make a quick getaway. She already joked about that over the phone with me lol. Despite all that I'm looking forward to it...I think...Unless?
