Seriously a no-brainer, because THE ENTIRE TRAIN ROUTE EXISTS ALREADY!!! This is an old basically unused shipping rail line that already runs through Brooklyn and Queens! So they don't have to do the biggest hardest part of building a new rail line in a packed city - the tunneling! All they have to do is install stations for the train to stop at! That's still a big project of course, but the hardest part is already pre-created!

It's so desperately needed. Anyone who has used the subway in NYC knows what a pain it is if you want to go between Brooklyn and queens. Best case you catch the G which if you're going to the outer side of the borough is still a long way out of your way. This would be a critical link between the very sprawling lines, and definitely will revitalize the outer edges

Can't wait until Dried Turnip shuts it down with an executive order 🥲

i so desperately want to see locals go "okay, who cares?" and do it anyway

Which line, there’s like 200 lines? Sorry I just don’t know NYC’s transit well.

That's okay, it's the purple on one the left. It's a big deal because as you can see, their network is more of a "hub and spoke" where all of the lines go through Manhattan. But if you want to go from Brooklyn to queens you have to take huge detours armnd roundabout ways to get there. This connects most of the lines at the edges

Ugh, in Chicago we have the same hub and spoke problem. So frustrating.

Let’s just hope it doesn’t take 30yrs to open.

Still worth it if it does.

IBX? I think they have tablets for that now.

I mean it's a good project, but not even close to being the most impactful NYC transit project in modern history.

[–] Beacon@fedia.io 13 points 1 month ago (1 children)

No, it really is. Name another single individual nyc subway project from the past 50 years that created a bigger expansion of available service. This is the biggest one, and by a massive amount

[–] DrunkEngineer@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago (2 children)

Well obviously the 2nd Ave Subway for starters.

[–] Beacon@fedia.io 4 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Dude not even close! The 2nd ave subway project added 3 new stops. The IBX is adding WAY more than that. And even if you wanna count the entire hypothetical second avenue line as a single project (which it obviously isn't because each "phase" of the entension is being done multiple decades apart at best), then the hypothetical entire line is still way less than the IBX.

[–] DrunkEngineer@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago

Just those 3 new stops have double the ridership of the entire IBX. When SAS phase 2 is added, the difference will be more like 5x.

Found the Manhattanite. You guys hate to admit anything important exists outside of Manhattan.

[–] JackLSauce@lemmy.world 10 points 1 month ago

I guess that's one way of describing 9/11...

[–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 1 points 1 month ago

It would be weird if they made it only move backwards.

I had to go on a low FODMAP diet for about a week once and it was awful. I feel bad for people who have to do that all their life.

[–] egrets@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago

This is an IBX map, not a FODMAP.
