Ok, seriously, just use Linux. I know how it sounds, but I'd say a majority of people use a computer to use a web browser. Guess what? We browsers have always worked and been native with Linux.

Problem is, it's not a passion for most people and they just want to buy something and get on the internet. While they exist, you can't exactly go to Best buy and buy a new computer running Linux.

But really, if you have hardware that works well with it, it's a dream.

I will when either Nvidia supports it fully, or AMD releases a GPU that can keep up in the ray tracing department.

Also, HDR support in Linux needs to get a lot better. Like an order of magnitude better. Then and only then will I switch.

[–] semperverus@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago

Linux has HDR support now, and there are slightly more configuration options for it than in Windows under KDE Plasma. These are very recent developments.

[–] kieron115@startrek.website 9 points 5 days ago

A friend of mine just installed CachyOS Desktop Edition (plasma) and I brought up the HDR calibration in windows, thinking that was something linux still didn't have. Turns out at least some DEs (i think thats a DE thing?) do have decent HDR support now. I still want RTX features tho.

[–] TacoSocks@infosec.pub 2 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Those seem like niche things to hold on to. A 5090 should work just fine under Linux, what feature do you use that isn't supported? Also a 9070 XT is capable of doing ray tracing. You don't always have to have the absolute most powerful card.

I don't have an HDR monitor so can't say how well it works in Linux, but you can survive without HDR. Is a better lighting contrast that big of a deal?

[–] Psythik@lemmy.world 5 points 5 days ago (3 children)

With an Nvidia GPU on Linux, you don't get the Nvidia App or even the Nvidia Control Panel. That means no 3D Settings page, no RTX HDR, no Shadowplay, no game filters, no video upscaling in Firefox... All features that I paid money to have and use daily. None of it exists in Linux beyond wonky half-solutions.

[–] semperverus@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago

It doesn't mean you don't get those things, it just means that you don't use them via a control panel.

There are a few solutions for shadowplay that are all decent to excellent, rtx HDR I think is automatic in Proton? Not sure what you mean by game filters unless you're talking about reshade, and I wasn't aware there was a video upscaler in Firefox.

I'm run Nvidia since before I started using Linux. Sometimes waking from sleep doesn't work, other than that I have zero issues. Ymmv of course.

[–] Psythik@lemmy.world 2 points 5 days ago (1 children)

I've already tried Linux with an Nvidia GPU. The driver is bare bones. You don't get the Nvidia App or even the Nvidia Control Panel. That means no 3D Settings page, no RTX HDR, no Shadowplay, no game filters, no video upscaling in Firefox... All features that I paid money to have and use daily.

Point I'm making is that I didn't spend a bunch of money on a 4090, onlyto not be able to fully utilize every feature it has to offer.

[–] cyberpunk007@lemmy.ca 2 points 3 days ago

Ya fair, I just play stock settings usually and don't care about ray tracing of HDR. That's why I can't justify upgrading from a 2070s

Funny thing is, on my laptop there's an issue with Linux and browsers. Any video or animation, even little animations, runs at like 3fps. This makes using a browser virtually impossible.

Everything else works well, but that just doesn't make Linux an option for me right now. I tried a variety of browsers and distros. It's really frustrating. It's not even a bad laptop, Lenovo Legion 5 pro RTX3060.

[–] cacti@ani.social 1 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago) (1 children)

What GPU does your laptop have?

[–] sykaster@feddit.nl 1 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago) (1 children)

I said in my previous comment an RTX3060 and an iGPU. I tried with the iGPU, without the iGPU, switching them, hybrid mode. Nvidia drivers, nouveau drivers, it's always the same.

I wrote a post on it some time ago: https://feddit.nl/post/34127250

[–] cacti@ani.social 1 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Sorry, I had just woken up so I missed it 😓. I would suggest asking this in your distro's forum if you still have Linux installed on that laptop.

[–] sykaster@feddit.nl 2 points 5 days ago

Been there, done that. I also went to the Lenovo Legion Linux discord server. All great people, but their advanced solutions didn't work either. Even people with exactly the same model didn't have this issue. I have no idea what it could be, maybe something hardware related.

I think it’s likely that Microsoft will start turning it on by default, and resetting it with updates for people who have opted out. Much like they did with edge and Cortana, intentionally making it harder to choose not to use it.

More programs actively blocking it will make that harder, but I wonder how many will stick to their guns when pressured by Microsoft.

I suspect that Microsoft will ratchet up the pressure to force it on people as the gen AI bubble pops, an attempt to keep the narrative alive to keep up demand for their overbuilt GPU data centers.

[–] neutronillum@lemmy.ml 5 points 6 days ago

Yup, that's how they operate...

[–] menixator@lemmy.dbzer0.com 19 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago)

Or . . at this point, if you don't have a very good reason to keep using windows, (eg: work, professional software unavailable on linux/through wine), just stop making concessions for windows and use Linux.

This just reads as "here's a pill to make that stick up your ass hurt less" just pull it out ffs

MARK MY WORDS: They're going to feed your screenshots into an AI eventually, then try to make an operating system that you don't need a mouse for.

One that does everything people do on computers (the basic stuff anyways). That's their goal here; AI OS.

Nothing private about Windows recall. It makes your computer usage into their training data.

[–] jjlinux@lemmy.zip 5 points 6 days ago

This is the way of the world, but only because people are allowing it. I will never understand "I'm too lazy to care about my privacy", which undermines our security way more than we even know.

The worst part is that, no matter how some of us care and do something about our privacy, the ones that we interact with that don't care still expose us to all this BS. Until the world changes it's mindset, this will not change, and only get worse (I'm not holding my breath for people to care though).

They’re going to feed your screenshots into an AI eventually, then try to make an operating system that you don’t need a mouse for.

Or they're going to feed them to the first fascist who asks. With or without a warrant.

EDIT: Also, Microsoft already sold an OS you don't need a mouse for. It was called DOS.

[–] forkDestroyer@infosec.pub 10 points 5 days ago
  1. Linux tutorials need to get idiot proof.
  2. They need to work on giving people knowledge about driver support. "Why doesn't my bluetooth/sound/wifi work anymore?" shouldn't be such a common issue for people switching to those OSs.
  3. If Recall is sending your information to offsite servers, what's stopping people from flooding those servers with bs?
[–] Treczoks@lemmy.world 7 points 5 days ago

How about just blocking Windows instead?

[–] misteloct@lemmy.dbzer0.com 9 points 5 days ago

Oh come on, you think it's not in the OS itself with no ability to disable it? AdGuard is not going to necessarily help the fundamental issue here.

I switched to Linux Mint and I have t looked back. I don't know why it took me this long. My laptop died and I had to budget for a 2017 corporate dell laptop, installed mint and I honestly can't tell much of a difference from what I need from day to day. I can't game on it really but that's not aLinux issue. And I have a steam deck for that.

[–] Capricorn_Geriatric@lemmy.world 10 points 6 days ago

"Opt out of" or disable/block?

To me, "block" or "disable" seems like it blocks/disables the feature machine-wide, when it just says "pretty please, make me black after you take that screenshot".

[–] dimjim@sh.itjust.works 6 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Im so glad I finally made the jump to linux. For anyone still on the fence about it, do it. It's so easy to switch, I've been using Kubuntu for a few weeks now and I have had maybe one issue with playing games, and it was solved by changing the Steam compatibility layer version.

When I switched, I installed a fresh (debloated) Windows instance on another SSD just in case. You know how many times I've used it? ONCE, and it was only be cause a buddy wanted me to try a game that had anticheat (I think Rocket League). Other than that I've had no reason to use it. There's a decent replacement for just about every Windows software out there, and if I ever come across a need for software I can't run on Linux, I'll just use the Windows instance for it. Other than that Microsoft can suck it. They're not getting any more of my info.

Now if only I didn't just get a new Android phone, I'd swap over to a de-Googled phone....

[–] cacti@ani.social 3 points 5 days ago (1 children)

What phone model is it? You can probably unlock the bootloader and install a de-googled rom, or get root access and de-google it yourself.

[–] dimjim@sh.itjust.works 2 points 5 days ago

It's an S25, and I bought it mysel lol, I don't to mess it up. My plan is to deal with it for a year, then buy a pixel for cheap and throw Grapheneos on it. If I screw up the pixel I at least have a backup.

[–] Squizzy@lemmy.world 1 points 4 days ago

I have W11 for work and cant find the recall feature anywhere.
