I really hope she made copies of the documents and leaks then

[–] dhork@lemmy.world 38 points 1 day ago (2 children)

She won't, though. It sucks to be on the side with integrity and ethics. It's like having one oath tied behind your back....

When Nazis game the system and try to dismantle the rule of law, the ethical thing to do is to start breaking the damned rules and fighting back.

Just ask O. John Rogge how it’s done.

"The removal of Hitler and Mussolini and a few of their collaborators does not mean that fascism is dead. Now the fascists can take a more subtle disguise, they can come forward and simply say 'I am anti-Communist.'" -O. John Rogge

The fight against fascism never ended, the fascists have been masquerading as republicans for 50 years, and now that Trump has given them all license, they are dropping their masks.

That's silly! If everyone who is anti-Communist was fascist, then the entire US during the Cold War was...

Realization

[–] BestBouclettes@jlai.lu 4 points 1 day ago

Well, technically, integrity and ethics would require making them public

Would a fair trial be possible if they were published?

[–] paultimate14@lemmy.world 30 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Is a fair trial possible if they aren't published?

[–] lost@lemmy.wtf -3 points 1 day ago (3 children)

Absolutely - they can be used as evidence before the courts. If the press has already declared someone guilty, a fair trial is no longer possible.

[–] Glitterbomb@lemmy.world 23 points 1 day ago

So Luigi is getting let go later today, right?

[–] paultimate14@lemmy.world 14 points 1 day ago (1 children)

No I mean: is any kind of trial going to happen at all?

It's been almost 6 years since Epstein didn't kill himself, and there's no sign of any further prosecutions coming from it. What gives you the impression anything is going to happen here?

What gives you the impression anything is going to happen here?

Probably the same Liberal naïveté that makes the Dem leadership keep pretending that anything good can come from negotiating with fascists and reminding them of the rules they don't think apply to them

It's not easy to shake off a lifetime of being told "Nobody's above the law" and all that crap, but it is entirely crap. The rich and well-connected are miles above the law. It's a miracle when any of them face justice, and it's not happening in this case, certainly.

I think it’s more about fair political consequences. I think you’re absolutely right though, and what you brought up needs to be considered as well.

[–] BestBouclettes@jlai.lu 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Probably not, but at least it would be out there. It could be a wake up call for millions of people.

[–] lost@lemmy.wtf 0 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Any lawyer would argue that a fair trial is not possible if these pages were published and the press ran multiple articles on the topic. They would be right, too. It's shitty, but if we want these people to do time, publishing is not the best option.

[–] paultimate14@lemmy.world 10 points 1 day ago

Whose lawyer would be arguing that?

They already charged and convicted Maxwell. Espstein is dead. Prince Andrew has been shrugging off lawsuits since 2004.

There is no trial for anyone left. There will not be justice. The best we can hope for is that the historical legacies of these people are stained for the rest of tjne.
