Sir, this is a joke about how it would be awful if the sun were always up.

But also, the UK just had its second warmest June ever (England's warmest ever) and was over 30C in many places. During these heatwaves, the temperature rises rapidly, making it uncomfortable because people are not used to the warmer temperatures. After 7 days of warm temperatures, people get used to it.

[–] AI_toothbrush@lemmy.zip 13 points 2 months ago (1 children)

I know but making fun of the uk, especially england is always justified and funi

[–] NoPanko@feddit.uk 3 points 2 months ago (1 children)

As a brit (specifically english) i agree

[–] AI_toothbrush@lemmy.zip 5 points 2 months ago

[–] Engywuck@lemmy.zip 7 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Living in Spain, can confirm. It's being awful.

[–] Rusty@lemmy.ca 9 points 2 months ago

You cannot spell Spain without Pain.

[–] AlligatorBlizzard@sh.itjust.works 3 points 2 months ago (1 children)

JFC that's too hot. I'd been thinking maybe Spain would be a nice place to move to and a bit more like where I grew up climate wise... that's way too much like Florida. Is that at least a dry heat or is it outdoor sauna?

[–] daniskarma@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago) (1 children)

Depending where you go. If you go to the coast there's a lot of humidity. On the center the climate is very dry and the nights are not so hot. Typical day in interior spain temperature can go from 10C to 35C easily.

Still pretty hotter than the rest of europe overall.

Climate wise the worst is that we are very vulnerable to climate change. Our highest temperatures are already pretty high so higher temperatures in summer will be deathly. Also some parts of Spain are vulnerable to drastic climate events, recently two hundred people die in a heavy flood in Valencia.

[–] AI_toothbrush@lemmy.zip 3 points 2 months ago

Yeah its a sad thing when your country had weather you liked and then climate change ruined it. While i also like the weather in some parts of spain, my favourite thing is very continental weather. Hungary used to be that with -15 in winters and +30-35 in summers and now its wet 0c winters and a bit hotter summers(which dont bother me that much tbf). Its interesting that it didnt just shift up the temperature by x degrees, instead it nuked winter and made summer only a bit hotter.

40 cents rot? Prices in the US are pretty steep, nowadays, it seems.

The Britain's empire?

[–] Lemminary@lemmy.world 9 points 2 months ago

"Only mad dogs and Englishmen go out in the noon day sun". Not sure where I heard that quote but it's always stuck with me.

[–] Yondoza@sh.itjust.works 29 points 2 months ago (4 children)

It's an old saying. The Empire had colonies all over the world so at any point in time it was day for at least one colony. Therefore the sun never set on The Empire as a whole.

The joke is making fun of that old saying, pretending it means there is no night for the British isles and all the sun is causing the temperature of the isles to increase.

I hope that's enough explanation to remove any humor from the joke.

[–] Smoogs@lemmy.world 5 points 2 months ago

Na, you’re good. The joke didnt have humour to begin with enough to ruin

[–] VinesNFluff@pawb.social 2 points 2 months ago

An explained joke might lose its funny in the moment

But you also ensure future jokes riffing on similar ideas will land better. ;)

[–] MalReynolds@slrpnk.net 2 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Seeing as you seem knowledgeable what's up with the 'ring the bells' bit?

[–] ElectricTrombone@lemmy.world 2 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago) (1 children)

In a boxing match they ring a bell to signal the end of the round. He's saying he can't take the heat anymore. He's lost the fight. "Ring the bell already. I'm done. I can't take it anymore".

[–] MalReynolds@slrpnk.net 1 points 1 month ago

Ahh, thanks.

[–] Diddlydee@feddit.uk 2 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Although the saying ends '...on the British empire', not the weird wording in the poster that no one would ever use.

[–] b_tr3e@feddit.org 1 points 2 months ago

I'd use it all the ways.

[–] Lembot_0004@discuss.online 3 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Is that W before Britain? What does it mean?

[–] Atom@lemmy.world 4 points 2 months ago (1 children)

The logo is for a toy brand, Britains, formerly W. Britains in the era of this advert.

Thanks! Never been to Britain, so no chance of knowing this nuance...

[–] matelt@feddit.uk 2 points 2 months ago

Poorly timed as the sun finally set on the British empire for the first time in over a century just a few months ago

But when though? This says it would be a few millenia until it happens (not the best source, I know), and the British government still has yet to ratify the Chagos Islands deal that happend in May as of today.

[–] Bronzebeard@lemmy.zip 1 points 1 month ago (1 children)
[–] Lemmisaur@lemmy.zip 1 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

That was the reason I brought up that the Chagos Islands has not been transferred to Mauritius yet (with the earliest date for it being August 1st). So the sun still hasn't set on them. (Fortunately though the Brits didn't get to summon the soul eater that night.)

[–] otter@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 2 months ago

The sun never sets? Is that why y'all got them olde timey kaniggets?
