Have you seen an african bull elephant in musth? Fucking terrifying.

Additionally, only young, sexually immature bulls live in their family. When they're grown up, they live in bachelor groups led by a dominant male. During musth, they are roaming the savannah individually.

highest overall or highest percentage by body mass. Because one of the highest makes it sound like its a group of the largest mammals.

How do you perceive this from:

Male elephants have on of the highest tesstosterone levels of any animal

?

A level is already a relative quantity.

[–] HubertManne@piefed.social 9 points 2 months ago

I mean maybe. Im not really sure what level means. Is it an amount in a particular volume of blood as that would definitely be relative.

That's an excellent question, otherwise we'll end up with the whole lone alpha wolf meme nonsense again.

For example, this study talks about 'musth' when male elephants experience increased testosterone - perhaps that's what it's refering to. With a very quick Google search I couldn't find any general ranking of testosterone to body weight in animals.

Male elephants experience a biological phenomenon called “musth”, which is characterized by increased testosterone production, temporal gland secretion and urine dribbling, heightened aggression and sexual behavior, and therefore can pose unique challenges for human safety and animal welfare.

That makes sense. I forget sometimes the yearly mating common in animals works in both how the females and males systems work.

Many human families are led by a matriarch whose word is law.

A elephant never forgets, 9/11…
