The only thing necessary for evil to triumph is for good people to do nothing. - Burke.

Yes it's miserable, and I'm not sure if I'm doing anything at all, but turning away seems worse.

[–] JillyB@beehaw.org 11 points 2 months ago

I don't think it's right to assume that people who block political online content are doing nothing. Hell, I think it's more likely that people who consume a lot of political content feel that they're doing something when they aren't.

[–] GlenRambo@jlai.lu 11 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Implying Lemmy is the best/only place to get political news. :/

Some of us come here for fun and get our doom elsewhere.

[–] BrainInABox@lemmy.ml 5 points 2 months ago

Where do you get yours from?

Guy on the right is smiling at a nuclear sunrise (he doesn't know)

[–] Chivera@lemmy.world 44 points 2 months ago (1 children)

I don't block it because I want to start up to date with the Nazi regime

[–] ColeSloth@discuss.tchncs.de 12 points 2 months ago

I also want to view more than 20 different posts a day...

[–] Almacca@aussie.zone 36 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Really? The collapse of a superpower isn't fascinating to you?

[–] C8r9VwDUTeY3ZufQRYvq@sopuli.xyz 11 points 2 months ago (1 children)

I enjoy watching slow motion train crashes as much as the next guy, but everyone needs a break sometimes, you know?

Have you tried closing the app? That's what I do when I've had enough.

[–] apotheotic@beehaw.org 8 points 2 months ago

That's a pretty blatant false dichotomy

[–] EmpathicVagrant@lemmy.world 24 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Ignorance to current events isn’t joy.

[–] Sanguine_Sasquatch@lemmy.world 15 points 2 months ago (1 children)

No, but drowning in political events doesn't make for a positive experience either

[–] match@pawb.social 11 points 2 months ago

I'm actually having a great time seeing my comrades on the streets

[–] asbestos@lemmy.world 17 points 2 months ago (3 children)

And then there’s no content :(

[–] thesohoriots@lemmy.world 33 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Nah, there’s plenty of Linux and Star Trek

oh you must be somehow dodging the countless anime and furry communities that are alive and "well"

Idk who the fuck Moe is but this cartoon gal has quite an imaginative and loyal following

[–] Johandea@feddit.nu 7 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Aber es gibt so viel Inhalt!

[–] Mim@lemmy.zip 4 points 2 months ago

In der Tat. Ü

Please be patient with us while we struggle with trying to stop a burgeoning dictatorship.

[–] BrainInABox@lemmy.ml 3 points 2 months ago (1 children)

For people outside the US, it has been a brutal dictatorship for a long time. The people whos countries you destroy certainly don't get a vote

The people in this thread acting like you need to be tuned in to everything all the time with no filter baffle me. You can block all politics on Lemmy and get your political news elsewhere. People are more than entitled to cultivate the spaces they inhabit and use.

[–] rabber@lemmy.ca 15 points 2 months ago

Unfortunately feels like it's my responsibility to be paying attention at this point no matter how noisy and brutal it gets

[–] Zwiebel@feddit.org 13 points 2 months ago (1 children)
[–] Novocirab@feddit.org 3 points 2 months ago (3 children)

There are word filters for Lemmy?

[–] GregorGizeh@lemmy.zip 7 points 2 months ago

Some Clients such as Voyager have it

[–] StarvingMartist@sh.itjust.works 5 points 2 months ago

If you use boost I know there is

Ignore it all you like, sadly it will affect you too

[–] MinekPo1@lemmygrad.ml 10 points 2 months ago (1 children)

honestly i use lemmy explicitly for the politics , helps me remain sane

[–] Cowbee@lemmy.ml 4 points 2 months ago

I think a strong understanding of Marxism helps seed the revolutionary optimism that makes watching the news more bearable than for liberals who see the world as a scary swirl of chaos and no way out. Lenin says it well:

Despair is typical of those who do not understand the causes of evil, see no way out, and are incapable of struggle.

This fits the liberal nihilism to a T.

[–] zapzap@lemmings.world 9 points 2 months ago (1 children)

The rest of the world is just sunshine and roses right now.

Ignoring the world definitely makes you good global citizens and not problems to work around. Good job. Way to go.

[–] TheWolfOfSouthEnd@lemmygrad.ml 4 points 2 months ago

They said “US communities”, not the world.

[–] Zenith@lemm.ee 7 points 2 months ago

I live here! If I chose to be willfully ignorant I’d be no better than all those on the right I’ve been talking about being willingly ignorant for decades

I’m no hypocrite

[–] theangriestbird@beehaw.org 6 points 2 months ago

Regretfully this is my local news so sticking my head in the sand probably won't help.

[–] pineapplelover@lemm.ee 5 points 2 months ago

I don't subscribe to political communities at all. If I want to see politics I switch to the All tab. Most of the time I go through Subscribed or Local though.

[–] RandomVideos@programming.dev 5 points 2 months ago (1 children)

You could also choose an instance like programming.dev that hides political communities by default

[–] hacktheegg@programming.dev 7 points 2 months ago

I didn't even realise my instance did this (I didn't do research)

But if this is it minimised, I don't want to see the full amount

[–] djsaskdja@reddthat.com 4 points 2 months ago (1 children)

How would you even do this? It would take forever. Is there like a blocklist you can import?

Can we start a thread with like blocking words, but yes blocking makes Lemmy the best
