It's erythritol

Erythritol may impair cellular functions essential to maintaining brain blood vessel health, according to researchers at the University of Colorado Boulder. Findings suggest that erythritol increases oxidative stress, disrupts nitric oxide signaling, raises vasoconstrictive peptide production, and diminishes clot-dissolving capacity in human brain microvascular endothelial cells.

When on Earth did that become major?

It's mixed with other artificial sweeteners (I know of at least the monk fruit in my pantry) to get better weight to sweetness ratios. Most of the most popular artificial sweeteners are far stronger, sometimes hundreds of times stronger, than sugar. So they mix them with erythritol, which is less sweet than sugar, so you can replace 5g of sugar with 5g of the artificial sweetener in recipes and get the right sweetness.

It's a common sweetener in keto foods.

Pretty sure another study found Xylitol might have the same issue. I'm personally avoiding sugar alcohols at this point. That said, it severely limits sweetener options for people that have blood sugar issues.

I can't touch sugar alcohols.

If I even look at them, I'll spend the next week on the toilet.

I have to avoid a lot of the low fat/low carb foods because they use this. Also almost anything sweetened with monkfruit has this in it.

It seems to not effect my coke zeros lol, think thats the only thing I use with a sugar sub but I def abuse it. Still gotta be better than the calories I used to consume.

Sorry I don't speak in a robotic pedantic manner online, I will have chat gpt reframe everything I say from now on.

Apologies for any informal tone—moving forward, I’ll rephrase my messages through ChatGPT to ensure clearer, more structured communication.

@3dmvr @zr0 gosh chat gpt is so trash

The sweetener in question is erythritol. Coke Zero uses aspartame and acesulfame potassium.

Aspartame has shown evidence that it can potentially damage your liver, though.

Doesn't sound good
