George Wendt, an actor with an Everyman charm who played the affable, beer-loving barfly Norm on the hit 1980s TV comedy “Cheers” and later crafted a stage career that took him to Broadway in “Art,” “Hairspray” and “Elf,” has died. He was 76.

Wendt’s family said he died early Tuesday morning, peacefully in his sleep while at home, according to the publicity firm The Agency Group.

He played a delightful psycho in the John Landis directed episode “Family” of Masters of Horror. Always a pleasure to see him pop up in stuff.

Coach: What would you say to a nice beer, Normie?

Norm: Going down?

"What's shaking, Norm?"

"All four cheeks & a couple of chins."

Weird that he was only 76, he looked like he was in his 50s back in the 80s.

Edit He was 34 when Cheers started and 45 when it ended...

Jason Alexander and his character George were 29 in the Seinfeld pilot

That's so weird, I'm 7 years older and I still look like a child, comparatively

All the angels used the best greeting...Norm!

I'll have a beer in your name tomorrow. My gf and I are watching through Cheers currently, only season 2 and it's all nostalgia. To be fair we don't really remember most of these early episodes but every episode feels like watching TV with my parents in the 80s to me.

I loved Harry Anderson as Harry the Hat, then they gave him Night Court.

I guess I haven't seen him in awhile but time keeps moving on.

I am going to be running across his work again soon as I am almost up to his Columbo episode.

I just found out he was in (as injured man) Jekyll and Hyde ... Together Again. Huh.

I really enjoyed him in House. He was great as the neighbor.

RIP George. Cheers.

But Norm would be pissed you let a good beer go unconsumed.

Every time I hear his name:

Sad news, on a more serious note.
