Tournament's over! And I don't plan to post til the next one, tho you're welcome to post stuff if you want obv. You can search youtube and the web for fun sumo stuff til then, but I thought I'd recc some sumo movies and shows:
- @jeena@piefed.jeena.net recommended SANCTUARY, and indeed it's a great series. Looks like it's a Netflix-exclusive: https://piefed.jeena.net/post/129120
- SUMO DO, SUMO DON'T (1992) - pretty cool movie, about a college kid who gets involved in his college's Sumo team. this isn't available on a corporate stream in the US, but there's a youtube video where a couple Texas sumotori do a watch-through of it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Aij5PTNHdvY
- SUMO DO, SUMO DON'T (2022) - a miniseries that's kind of a "next generation" of the movie. Looks like it's on Disney: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt22187310/
- HINOMARU SUMO (2018-2019) - an anime about a high-school sumo wrestler. Typical sports anime plot, but fun bc it's about sumo! You can watch most of the first two seasons here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5CISA3X2cJw but I think it's missing the last episode, so if you get that far you can look for that here: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt10066026/
Another fun thing to do is check out local amateur groups. If you're in the US, you can look here:
- https://www.ussumo.org/map Most people I've met at sumo clubs were really cool, there's usually some mix of interest in martial arts with interest in Japanese culture. This post's image (via https://grandsumobreakdown.wordpress.com/2024/03/04/american-sumo-newsletter-february-2024/) shows a bunch of those clubs, they usually welcome newcomers, and they generally do local tournaments and exhibitions, so support your local sumo team!
Finally, it's a lot of fun to add some sumo-related exercises to your workout. Here are a couple of the basics that I like:
- Shiko: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YLvHesbDZUQ&t=30s
- Teppo (I use a punching bag against the wall): https://youtu.be/wN2GtAVYSpM?t=109
Hakkeyoi!!!
