I wouldn't call it nothing

I suppose it's somethingn't

Once again supporting my theory that will never be a decisive moment in time when everything comes crashing down, things are just gradually going to get worse, and worse, and worse… there will be no September 1st moment, the heat is (literally) going to be turned up until we’re all cooked to death.

has cancelled all reciprocal tarrifs on China

Source? I thought it was going back to 30% which is still very close to the initial "reciprocal" tariffs

[–] CarlMarks@lemmygrad.ml 8 points 2 months ago

I think the baseline default was around 20% before, which makes 30% still an increase.

I am personally feeling some relief. I am the trough. Now probably I just have to deal with a couple slow months instead of staring down unemployment.

I have mixed feelings.

On the one hand, if this reduces suffering, that’s objectively a good thing.

On the other hand, the Trump team is calling this a “victory” (“look at me fixing the problem I created, but still worse in the end”). If we avoid complete economic meltdown in the next few months, the dumb-dumbs who believe Fox News will buy the bullshit narrative. The accelerationist in me prefers a flare-up over a slow burn, so I dunno.

They're going to say they win either way. Bad conditions don't result in better politics they just get more extreme in their views. If that were the case you should already be seeing positive results.

imo things getting worse without the working class building & bolstering militant institutions of direct power just means things get worse. you need capitalism to hit a crisis point + the working class to become an actual existential threat and force to be reckoned with for revolutionary change to go down. the amerikan left is nascent at best rn (though in my most optimistic moments i think maybe we're planting strong seeds, or at least stronger seeds than it seems at a glance), so anything that alleviates suffering and buys our class time to build the bones of something substantial is the best outcome at this juncture.

[–] FunkyStuff@hexbear.net 21 points 2 months ago

The problem is that there's not really a chance for the working class to build consciousness and organization until material conditions reach a more radicalizing point, so you have a chicken and egg problem. I think the real danger is in things deteriorating too suddenly, reaching a boiling point before the socialist organizations have enough maturity to seize the chance.

If we avoid complete economic meltdown

The whole world has confirmation that amerika isn't to be trusted and dealt with. The global south has watched for a year and a half of amerika doing genocide while talking about Rules and Human Rights. Nobody outside The West, thinks very highly of amerika anymore. Plus, there's gonna be a gap in the supply chain from when there was so much uncertainty. It might not be as catastrophic now, but amerika isn't gonna fully recover from this.

same. both my partner and I are on different ends of the retail slop chain. our jobs are shitty but typically considered "recession proof"

In exchange for China bringing their own tariffs down to 10%, no? I thought this was kind of a disappointing China concession after all.

[–] Lussy@hexbear.net 7 points 2 months ago

Yeah, didn’t tariffs on China increase 5 in total and remain the same the other way around?

[–] notarobot@lemm.ee 8 points 2 months ago (1 children)

I really thought it was "president 11".

[–] Lucien@mander.xyz 4 points 2 months ago
