Ten days after an equipment malfunction left about a dozen planes flying blind for 90 seconds in the crowded skies over New Jersey, worried pilots and air traffic controllers are imploring the Federal Aviation Administration to fix the system's aging infrastructure.

The "shell-shocked" controllers who guide planes in and out of Newark Liberty International Airport work in constant fear of radar systems' going down or losing radio contact with pilots as they're approaching one of the busiest airports in the country, a recently retired controller told NBC News.

Both of those failures happened at once on April 28.

Heads up this is about to get worse. Republicans recently voted to cut retirement funding for air traffic controllers. . By cutting the Federal Employees Retirement System (FERS) for workers retiring before 62 (all Air Traffic Controllers are required to retire at 56 and are eligible to retire at 50), this is completely fucking over ATCs who continue working by changing their retirement math.

An open secret with ATCs is that they have numerous medical qualifications that they have to maintain to keep working. For example, if they see a doctor about sleep apnea, depression, alcoholism, etc they lose their medical qualification and are forced to take a medical retirement.

So what happens if you're an ATC in your 40s and the government says "hey you can keep working for the next 10 years and retire without this FERS supplement... Or you can tell your doctor that you snore at night and take an immediate medical retirement right now and get paid more in retirement"?

TLDR; We're about to have a shit load of Air Traffic Controllers taking medical retirements and these staffing problems are going to explode.

Silver-lining: This will disproportionately affect rich people and consumerists because they are the ones most likely to be flying.

[–] Wahots@pawb.social 24 points 1 day ago (1 children)

It affects everyone. Everyone is just one accident away from needing an air ambulance for an extraction, or an airlift to another region for specialized treatment (burns, cancer, etc). No good will come of this.

"no, see, the plane which crashed into my house was full of rich people"

All of this will be used by the current administration to push privatization of ATC.

They’re already working on brainwashing their base on this one. My dad started talking about how in Europe ATC is handled by a private company, not a part of the EU government.

I had to explain to him that Eurocontrol is an international organization, and that international organizations aren’t the same thing as private companies. No one calls the UN General Assembly, the WTO, or the IMF “private companies.”

[–] Aviandelight@mander.xyz 26 points 1 day ago

Which is fucking hilarious because most private industries that are safety conscious use FAA regulations as the gold standard to build theirs against.

I'm not going to get in a jet unless I absolutely fucking have to for a few years

It hasn't been appealing in a while. Long lines, invasive security, privacy violations, high ticket prices, getting stuck on the tarmac, CBP aggression, and now the people responsible for keeping planes from colliding are not able to do their job.

[–] Lexam@lemmy.world 21 points 1 day ago

I've already asked my boss who does not fly, if I have to travel can I drive myself. Because nope, nope, nope.

Trump is going to start racking up the body count quickly.

[–] Tja@programming.dev 8 points 14 hours ago

He caused a significant portion of the 1M covid deaths, and nobody cared. Forget about killing one person of fifth Avenue, he killed a whole city and gained votes. Americans are that stupid.

[–] CosmicTurtle0@lemmy.dbzer0.com 41 points 1 day ago (2 children)

He already has. The number of people he has ~~deported~~ kidnapped alone is enough to try him at the Hague.

Cutting USAID has a far larger effect. Millions will likely die from preventable diseases in developing countries due to it.

And every time we cut off antibiotic treatment of tuberculosis we’re rolling the dice on resistance. It’s a matter of time before we have a version of TB we can’t treat in the developed world, too, if this behavior keeps up.

Donald Trump doesn't care about black people!

[–] DasAlbatross@lemmy.world 36 points 1 day ago

Look at all this efficiency!

[–] ryedaft@sh.itjust.works 38 points 1 day ago

Add to that that the flight software often doesn't recover well from passing an area with GPS jamming.

[–] sunglocto@lemmy.dbzer0.com 12 points 1 day ago
