Americans heard "liberty or death" and said "death please!"

If only. If I knew an ICE employee I would consider it my personal duty to make their lives living hell.

"The president gets expanded powers during an emergency"

"The president gets to declare what is an emergency"

Thanks Supreme Court and Congress. Who could have ever guessed that this system would be abused by an authoritarian. 🤷‍♂️

... This is unironically what all the rightwing conspiricists have been afraid of for two+ decades now.

This is what they thought Clinton, or Obama or somehow the UN or 'ZOG' would be able to use as the mechanism to instate tyranny.

... And now they are doing it themselves, so utterly deluded that they would short cicruit if you tried to explain this to them.

I grew up in a right wing nutjob household. This is what I was told my whole life, growing up. I was indoctrinated into it, and had to deconvert myself out of it similar how I had to deconvert out of christian extremism.

These people are perfect hypocrites.

Remember Jade Helm? They thought Obama was going to use military exercises to take control of Texas back in 2015 or so. Gov. Shitstain even made some comment lending credence to the theories. Now there’s a president using the military to control parts of Texas and they’re cool with it.

MAGA follows only a handful of rules, one most prominent is "it's only bad if you do it. If I do it then it's Morally Correct™©®."

[–] Guns0rWeD13@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

this is a rule that the left needs to adopt as well. there is no right or wrong in war, only winners and losers.

Congress needs to pass a law requiring that any national emergency needs to be confirmed by a super majority of both the house and Senate within 15 calendar days of declaration. Or from 15 days of the passage of this law, whichever is later. An ongoing national emergency must be renewed by Congress before the sixth month of its declaration, but no earlier than it's fifth month. Then on a yearly basis starting from the anniversary of its declaration.

Failing that, all emergency powers the president wields are revoked.

In a true emergency, the assemblage of Congress is not an onerous task. Nor is the vote.

But doesn’t everyone have guns?

[–] Maeve@kbin.earth 2 points 1 day ago

Never saw that coming! /s

[–] DarkFuture@lemmy.world 59 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Buy guns. Help others buy guns. Train. Help others train.

[–] UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world 24 points 2 days ago (5 children)

Listen, if it makes you feel safer, by all means get your guns.

But this isn't some individualist enterprise. You're not Rambo. Owning a gun is not going to save you from the police, much less the military

[–] StonerCowboy@lemm.ee 14 points 1 day ago (2 children)

This the stupid kind of thinking that will lead you smack into a full blown dictatorship.

Trust me as a Cuban. USE YOUR FUCKING GUNS before all you have left is pots and pans and then tell me how that works out.

Wtf is the military gonna do? Kill 200+ million Americans fighting? Then america will be nothing.

If the military wants to target citizens then its full out war.

America bows to no king or tyrants per our constitution.

Buy your guns people dont be a coward its your constitutional right. Don't be a coward and be like oh no tanks and military.

[–] BigxRedxHusker@midwest.social 8 points 1 day ago (1 children)

See I have a problem with cuban Americans saying they never want to live under a dictator again and then coming here and voting for a dictator and the party that wants absolute control of everything we do

[–] StonerCowboy@lemm.ee 8 points 1 day ago

Yep Miami is full of those ignorant ass Cubans. Same with Venezuelans left their shit and voted for Trump.

[–] UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago (3 children)

Trust me as a Cuban.

Cuban from Havana or Cuban from Florida?

Wtf is the military gonna do? Kill 200+ million Americans fighting?

Glances at Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, Syria, and Palestine

America bows to no king or tyrants per our constitution.

As someone who has spent my entire life in this country, I regret to inform you that there are few things Americans love more than the taste of boot. We pledge to the flag. We bow to the church. We grovel at the feet of the boss.

This country is flush with tyrants who parade about promising new kinds of liberty. And behind each one is a train of courtiers and sycophants and cronies and thugs, the first group singing their praises and the second stomping on the necks of anyone bold enough to heckle or jeer.

Buy your guns people dont be a coward its your constitutional right.

Buy your guns, sure. But who do you point them at? When the boss lays you off, the bank freezes your account, the grocery store locks its shelves, and the sheriff posts an eviction notice on your front door, who do you shoot? This isn't a war you can win with bullets. You're fighting a comprehensive economic system.

[–] DarkFuture@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Lots of words.

So your argument is "DO NOTHING"?

Why should we listen to you?

Like, what do you think you're accomplishing here?

The options are to buy guns and have some option for resistance against an oppressive regime, or listen to you and do nothing.

You're wasting our time. And yours.

That's where the "help others buy guns" and "help others train" comes in. The approach to this on the right vs the left is very different.

[–] Doorbook@lemmy.world 7 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Check every resistance group story world wide.

  1. never surrender your gun or get one
  2. if they start bombing you use tunnels
  3. it is better to die fighting, than having a slow death by a system that exploit you to make the rich richer.

Cool story.

So anyways, when a country starts allowing fascism to creep in, and the "leader" is openly defying that nation's Constitution, it benefits citizens to arm themselves to the teeth.

I am not, in any way, a gun person. I simply HAVE to be under the circumstances presenting themselves.

And under those circumstances it is better to have than have not.

I’d love for any military officer involved with this to explain why this isn’t a flagrant violation of the Posse Comitatus Act

[–] Ithral@lemmy.blahaj.zone 63 points 2 days ago

This is why "Command said the latest military zone will be part of the Fort Bliss Army base in El Paso."

Effectively what happened was the land was turned into a part of the base. At every US base there is a line usually shortly before the gate, sometimes only at the fence line where you are considered "on base". Once you are on base military police can arrest you since they have jurisdiction on base. Kinda like how if you commit a crime in an unincorporated area, the sheriff will arrest you, not city cops since that's their jurisdiction.

Frankly though this type of move is unprecedented, as far as I know. While the fed can just give fed land to bases, I've never heard of it happening like this. It's a loophole to keep it legal on paper but not in spirit.

Never forget this: Everyone participating and 'just following orders' is also responsible, from the highest bureaucrats and generals to the lowest public servants and soldiers. Couldn't have a death camp without everyone greenlighting and then Private John Doe following orders and building it.

Good fucking luck, USA. And may god have mercy on your souls.

US service members participating in these actions are enemies of the state IMO. I would like to see them treated as such.
