Welcome to c/news! Please read the Hexbear Code of Conduct and remember... we're all comrades here.

Rules:

-- PLEASE KEEP POST TITLES INFORMATIVE --

-- Overly editorialized titles, particularly if they link to opinion pieces, may get your post removed. --

-- All posts must include a link to their source. Screenshots are fine IF you include the link in the post body. --

-- If you are citing a twitter post as news please include not just the twitter.com in your links but also nitter.net (or another Nitter instance). There is also a Firefox extension that can redirect Twitter links to a Nitter instance: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/libredirect/ or archive them as you would any other reactionary source using e.g. https://archive.today/ . Twitter screenshots still need to be sourced or they will be removed --

-- Using April 1st as an excuse to post fake headlines, like the resurrection of Kissinger while he is still fortunately dead, will result in the poster being thrown in the gamer gulag and be sentenced to play and beat trashy mobile games like 'Raid: Shadow Legends' in order to be rehabilitated back into general society. --

On Friday is May 9th, which is the 80th anniversary of Victory Day, which Russia, among other places, celebrates as the day when the Soviets defeated the Nazis. Naturally, one of the current hotspots of fascism in the world today, Ukraine, is essentially threatening that they might strike Russia or even Moscow itself during that timeframe. Any such strike would almost certainly be symbolic and not aimed at anything too important, as I doubt even Zelensky and his American handlers would actually want to kill a world leader, not least somebody like Xi Jinping. But I would not be surprised if they tried something nonetheless, if only to disrupt the event in some way and not actually kill anybody.

And, as we're on this topic, @EllenKelly@hexbear.net has reminded me that Tuesday is the anniversary of the Nazis burning the Institut für Sexualwissenschaf in 1933, an early institute advocating for the rights of LGBT people, and which also provided early forms of gender-affirming surgeries, as well as hormone therapies. We are currently seeing a crackdown on LGBT rights throughout swathes of the imperial core (as well as countries in the periphery, to the extent that those rights existed there already), and this Nazi-inspired movement will be similarly defeated in the future.

Israel-Palestine Conflict

If you have evidence of Israeli crimes and atrocities that you wish to preserve, there is a thread here in which to do so.

Sources on the fighting in Palestine against Israel. In general, CW for footage of battles, explosions, dead people, and so on:

UNRWA reports on Israel's destruction and siege of Gaza and the West Bank.

Russia-Ukraine Conflict

Examples of Ukrainian Nazis and fascists
Examples of racism/euro-centrism during the Russia-Ukraine conflict

Sources:

Defense Politics Asia's youtube channel and their map. Their youtube channel has substantially diminished in quality but the map is still useful.
Moon of Alabama, which tends to have interesting analysis. Avoid the comment section.
Understanding War and the Saker: reactionary sources that have occasional insights on the war.
Alexander Mercouris, who does daily videos on the conflict. While he is a reactionary and surrounds himself with likeminded people, his daily update videos are relatively brainworm-free and good if you don't want to follow Russian telegram channels to get news. He also co-hosts The Duran, which is more explicitly conservative, racist, sexist, transphobic, anti-communist, etc when guests are invited on, but is just about tolerable when it's just the two of them if you want a little more analysis.
Simplicius, who publishes on Substack. Like others, his political analysis should be soundly ignored, but his knowledge of weaponry and military strategy is generally quite good.
On the ground: Patrick Lancaster, an independent and very good journalist reporting in the warzone on the separatists' side.

Unedited videos of Russian/Ukrainian press conferences and speeches.

Pro-Russian Telegram Channels:

Again, CW for anti-LGBT and racist, sexist, etc speech, as well as combat footage.

https://t.me/Slavyangrad ~ A few different pro-Russian people gather frequent content for this channel (~100 posts per day), some socialist, but all socially reactionary. If you can only tolerate using one Russian telegram channel, I would recommend this one.
https://t.me/s/levigodman ~ Does daily update posts.
https://t.me/patricklancasternewstoday ~ Patrick Lancaster's telegram channel.
https://t.me/gonzowarr ~ A big Russian commentator.
https://t.me/rybar ~ One of, if not the, biggest Russian telegram channels focussing on the war out there. Actually quite balanced, maybe even pessimistic about Russia. Produces interesting and useful maps.
https://t.me/epoddubny ~ Russian language.
https://t.me/boris_rozhin ~ Russian language.
https://t.me/mod_russia_en ~ Russian Ministry of Defense. Does daily, if rather bland updates on the number of Ukrainians killed, etc. The figures appear to be approximately accurate; if you want, reduce all numbers by 25% as a 'propaganda tax', if you don't believe them. Does not cover everything, for obvious reasons, and virtually never details Russian losses.
https://t.me/UkraineHumanRightsAbuses ~ Pro-Russian, documents abuses that Ukraine commits.

Pro-Ukraine Telegram Channels:

Almost every Western media outlet.
https://discord.gg/projectowl ~ Pro-Ukrainian OSINT Discord.
https://t.me/ice_inii ~ Alleged Ukrainian account with a rather cynical take on the entire thing.

boy oh boy lets check out the new pope's background on wikipedia clueless

cw sa

In 2000, Prevost allowed Father James Ray, an Augustinian priest, to reside at St. John Stone Friary in Chicago. Ray had been suspended from public ministry since 1991 due to credible accusations of sexual abuse of minors. Although the priory was close to a Catholic elementary school, Prevost did not notify the school administration about Ray.

doomscroll aw fuck nvm this place is fuckin depressing

[–] ThanksObama5223@hexbear.net 10 points 5 hours ago

At the risk of doxxing myself - the accusations against father McGrath are at least accurate. I have no idea whether this guy actually refused to remove McGrath from his position so take that what you will

Murican pope. We live in hellworld

[–] Wertheimer@hexbear.net 36 points 7 hours ago (4 children)

Prevost has faced criticism from advocates for clergy abuse survivors regarding his handling of sexual abuse allegations during his leadership in the Augustinian order and in Peru. The advocacy group SNAP (Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests) has alleged that Prevost failed to act against abuse claims involving Richard McGrath, a former president of Providence Catholic High School, allowing him to remain in his position despite longstanding accusations.

Can't believe JD vance killed Francis to install an American pope

[–] FunkyStuff@hexbear.net 25 points 6 hours ago (1 children)

I think it's a good time for anyone keeping up with the Vatican news to read up on Leo XIII's Rerum Novarum. Very interesting to see the way the Church (Vatican I in this case) approaches class struggle, and I can't help but feel like defining a Vatican II successor to Rerum Novarum will probably be a big part of this papacy. And of course, I'm very uneasy about having an American pope being the one to define it.

[–] OttoboyEmpire@hexbear.net 9 points 5 hours ago (1 children)

is the new pope taking the name leo suggestive that this would be forthcoming?

i'm not at all familiar with church politics, but it might seem like there isn't a need to reiterate a distributivist vision when there's no effective voice for labor that's seen in need of being moderated.

[–] FunkyStuff@hexbear.net 9 points 5 hours ago* (last edited 5 hours ago) (3 children)

There is, though, it's called the PRC. I think that will inevitably be a hard point for an American pope in the current conjuncture. Francis was exceptionally open to dialogue with China, I don't know if that's gonna be the case with Leo XIV.

Keep in mind, the way Leo XIII saw the Paris Commune is not all that different from how conservative Catholics see China right now.

With a discreet profile and a quiet voice, Prevost tends to avoid the spotlight and interviews. However, he is seen as a reformer, aligned with the line of openness implemented by Francis. He has a solid background in theology and is considered to have a deep knowledge of canon law, which governs the Catholic Church.

He entered religious life at the age of 22. He graduated in theology from the Catholic Theological Union in Chicago and, at 27, was sent to Rome to study canon law at the University of St. Thomas Aquinas. He was ordained a priest in 1982 and, two years later, began his missionary work in Peru - first in Piura, then in Trujillo, where he remained for ten years, even during the authoritarian government of Alberto Fujimori. Prevost even demanded a public apology for the injustices committed during that period.

In 2014, he was appointed administrator of the Diocese of Chiclayo, where he was ordained bishop and remained for nine years. During this time, he faced the main crisis of his career: in 2023, three women accused Prevost of covering up cases of sexual abuse committed by two priests in Peru when they were still children.

According to the reports, one of the victims called Prevost in 2020. Two years later, he formally received the reports and referred the case to the Vatican. One of the priests was preventively removed and the other was no longer working due to health reasons. The Peruvian diocese denies any cover-up and says that Prevost followed the procedures required by Church law. The Vatican has not yet concluded its investigation.

During his time in Peru, Prevost also held prominent positions in the local Episcopal Conference and was appointed to the Congregation for the Clergy and then to the Congregation for Bishops. In 2023, he received the title of cardinal - a position he held for less than two years before becoming pope, something rare in the modern Church.
