President Donald Trump on Wednesday acknowledged that his tariffs could result in fewer and costlier products in the United States, saying American kids might “have two dolls instead of 30 dolls,” but he insisted China will suffer more from his trade war.

The rich will still get 30 and a new sports car

Everyone knows the goal of running a country is to make people suffer. Not to accomplish anything positive. That would be GlObAlIsM

If Utilitarianism is about maximizing overall benefit and minimizing harm, Trump is an Inutilitarian

China is happily selling to the rest of the world, and yes their sales will go down without the US market, but they won't in sense of the word "suffer".

American kids might “have two dolls instead of 30 dolls,”

Operating on the assumption that most households aren't buying their kids 30 dolls (and those that do are probably going to be under the least economic pressure to cut spending), if American households actually cut spending on their kids by a proportional 93% of whatever they were going to spend, I expect that midterms are going to be interesting.

The wife and I have cut about that much of our spending, not including rent and bills. Major ports are already showing a 30 percent drop on imports. And not to mention that most of our farmland is either corn or soy. Pretty sure the majority of corn is used for ethanol and soy is exported. Other countries won't buy our exports and we won't by our own products. I've worked in manufacturing, American made is as bad as the "cheap" Chinese shit we complain about, only significantly higher priced.

Ah yes, the country with an established industrial base and centrally planned infrastructure is gonna suffer more from tariffs than the checks notes usury and consumption economy run by competing interests and bolstered almost entirely by the ownership of foreign assets and reliance on its currency for international trade.

Honestly my only conclusion is that they know and are willing to create an economic crisis for the purpose of consolidating political power in the form of "emergency measures" as fascists usually do. I refuse to believe they are just stupid

Trump, and many of his supporters, think that America is China's biggest client. They're totally blind to the idea that China is China's biggest client, and that it's not even close.

Their total lack of understanding of the world outside their little exceptionalist bubble is hilarious and depressing

[–] Corngood@lemmy.ml 15 points 1 week ago

Americans are basically winning because they aren't suffering the most

[–] RedditIsDeddit@lemmy.world 12 points 1 week ago

Trump has no idea how the world works at all

Almost everything we buy is from china including MAGA goods. This moron does not have a clue

[–] Bwaz@lemmy.world 5 points 1 week ago

If all US-produced products vanished from shelves in China, they'd hardly notice. We're about to discover the reverse situation.

[–] OhStopYellingAtMe@lemmy.world 11 points 1 week ago

“Kids might get two calories per day instead of 2,000. But hey, Chinese kids will suffer too!”

Cutting off your nose to spite China

[–] Carjacklavinder@reddthat.com 8 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Except a doll is $10 for the crappiest model, meaning were already only getting two dolls in the average budget. With that logic, we'll have to save up for the doll parts and assemble a single doll ourselves.

Hey as long as someone's suffering right?

[–] SocialMediaRefugee@lemmy.world 6 points 1 week ago (3 children)

I don't understand the hard on the right has for China yet they benefit greatly from China's low costs. As soon as the USSR fell and Islamic fundamentalism faded away I just knew the US would be looking for a new boogeyman to keep us distracted and justify defense spending.
