The lies don't have to be good, they just have to be believed. This in turn means that bad lies are actually more powerful and useful, because believing them reinforces the ingroup. Questioning dear leader?! That's grounds for a shunning!
there's zero chance Trump and Xi are talking. neither of these two have any idea how any of this works to the degree/level required to come to a trade deal with one another.
when there are legit trade talks it's going to be entire teams of people over the course of weeks/months with extreme technical understanding of commodities, manufacturing, currency, supply chains, etc.

The Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs has said yesterday and today that there have been no negotiations. Xi has made no comment because Trump hasn't talked to Xi.
Trump told Time magazine that he had called Xi and that negotiations were happening.
