“Art of the Deal”! Seriously, they want something that they can call a win and the only form of negotiation they understand is the shakedown and bullying. We shouldn’t assume there was ever another goal, at most there was a concept of an idea.

Attack first, then attack the response. It’s just bullying and control. Now you can say they admitted they were wrong and are still wrong by not offering enough. The point is control, terror, continued concessions, “winning”.

As someone who is good at reading between the lines of Japanese news reporting, here's my translation of a Japanese news source on what is being discussed in tariff negotiations:

アメリカ側は日本車の安全基準を見直すことなど要求を並べてきましたが、日本車にかかる関税25%を引き下げるつもりがあるのかなど、日本との交渉の方針は確認できなかったということです。

(Translation: The American side lined up requests to review Japanese automobile safety standards, but there was no confirmation of whether there was intent to drop the 25% automobile tariffs, and no indication of where the negotiations with Japan would lead.)

また日本への輸出を拡大したい農産物の品目に牛肉やコメ、魚介類、じゃがいもなどを列挙し、関税以外の障壁や制約を取り除くことも求めてきました。

(Additionally, the US negotiators rattled off a list of products they requested to expand their exports to Japan of as well as to remove regulations/non-tariff barriers. This included beef, rice, seafood and potatoes.)

赤沢大臣はこうした指摘に「優先順位をつけて示してほしい」と述べたということです。

(In response to these pointers, Minister Akazawa stated "We would like these requests ranked by priority".)

So all in all, the US side seems to spend their time listing a bunch of grievances, the Japan side lending an ear to their concerns, but not sure where the give-and-take part of the negotiations is here.

THE ART OF THE DEAL

[–] Phoenicianpirate@lemm.ee 6 points 1 day ago

You know what this is starting to sound like? The South Park episode Canada on Strike... except it is the US on strike and they are failing badly... and it is just a gaggle of fucking idiots dragging everyone down.

[–] orclev@lemmy.world 140 points 2 days ago (1 children)

You know that South Park episode where Japan is trying to use Pokemon to conquer the US and every time someone from the US goes to ask them about it they distract them by saying how huge their penis is? I can pretty much guarantee that tactic would work against Trump. Just tell him that he's winning and how amazing he is and how much you're being screwed over by him and he'll be happy.

This is what happens when you appoint all positions of power to unqualified people. Chaos, inefficiency and dysfuntion. Waste of tax payers money. Also no plan from the top.

[–] CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world 1 points 2 hours ago

Yes, but thank goodness donvict doesn't come off like some kind of "elite" (*) like that smarty-pants Kamala! I mean, I could have a beer with the guy because he's just like one of us! The collective "we" elected a moron so he could put people even stupider than him into positions of power underneath him...because that's what stupid and weak "leaders" do - surround themselves with people even less competent, because they don't want to be intimidated by any poindexters...

  • Elite here doesn't have anything to do with the usual definition, meaning ungodly amounts of parasitic wealth. In this version of it, it is only about people that have education, intelligence, expertise, experience, etc...and therefore might make the speaker feel badly about their own level of intelligence.

Musk wants access to Gundams and sailor uniforms with too many buttons.

[–] dan1101@lemm.ee 69 points 2 days ago (5 children)

It's pointless to negotiate, just wait for him to get impeached or die.

[–] AA5B@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago

Yet in the meantime there are real world consequences you need to try to manage. We’ve seen examples of every approach: fight, give in, negotiate, bow down ….. and it’s still unclear which will be most effective at either reducing harm or possibly seeing gains from the chaos

[–] Thedogdrinkscoffee@lemmy.ca 17 points 1 day ago (1 children)

He has no mind. He has no scruples. He has no honour or integrity. He is bound by no checks and balances, no competent court or rule of law.

There are no negotiations to be had. No deal will be honored. No system to appeal to. You could not be more correct. Don't bother answering the phone. Don't bother signing anything. Don't bother leadership meetings. Send the b team on a salvage operation but conceed nothing.

Find better trade partners.

[–] AA5B@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

Yet talking, or extending the talking, not disagreeing but asking for detail, is one way of buying time. Maybe they’ll have to make concessions or maybe someone will distract mango Mussolini before they do. Maybe just playing along while never resolving anything is a great way to play it

[–] bassomitron@lemmy.world 24 points 1 day ago

Unfortunately, they're one of our major trading partners, so their leaders don't want to just throw their hands up if they can help it since they owe it to their own citizens to try to make their economic lives less shitty. Just sucks that the US is being led by an insane, incompetent fascist cult.

[–] michel@lemmy.ml 2 points 1 day ago

Negotiations might not be fruitful but if you know that going in, and it can stave off tariffs for a while it might be worth it really. Just set expectations accordingly - and prepare for the worst. And don’t give actual concessions

[–] AnUnusualRelic@lemmy.world 11 points 1 day ago (2 children)

I think China is the one with the right method. Just retaliate.

[–] Pheonixdown@lemm.ee 11 points 1 day ago

If your adversary says you better not do something, you should probably heavily consider doing it.

[–] Ledericas@lemm.ee 1 points 1 day ago

they play the long game.

Because Trump doesn't know either. It is all posturing and nihilism.

Japan: What do you want?

America: Yes

Japan: What do you want?

America: Crash our own markets so our buddies can buy the remains of our economy for a few bucks. Nothing to do with you at all, but not gonna tell you that.

America: Oh, shit! We didn't think we'd get this far!

I mean if we REALLY hang them out to dry, they’re gonna revise their constitution and probably get the canned sunshine tech tree unlock pretty damn quick.

Same goes for South Korea.

get the canned sunshine tech tree unlock pretty damn quick

I'm sorry. I just don't know what that means, or references. I looked and the only thing I could find was this: https://mindustry-unofficial.fandom.com/wiki/Tech_Tree which I don't think is what you are referring.

[–] CosmoNova@lemmy.world 23 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Trying to have a conversation with the Trump administration is like trying to talk about politics, economics, the weather or whatnot with a conservative at the dinner table right now. It's just not worth the effort because they do not listen. Ever.

[–] shawn1122@lemm.ee 5 points 1 day ago

They listen but only if you're saying what they want to hear.

[–] Lembot_0002@lemm.ee 24 points 2 days ago

So Trump was lying requesting "ass kissing"? Go figure...

Being destabilised by Putin's puppets.

They can't negotiate for anything in case they actually get it and have to back down on the self destruction. The self destruction is the goal, and to make some money alone the way..
