Community rules (click to expand)

1. Follow the site-wide rules

2. Be civil
  • Understand the difference between a joke and an insult.
  • Do not harrass or attack users for any reason. This includes using blanket terms, like "every user of thing".
  • Don't get baited into back-and-forth insults. We are not animals.
  • Leave remarks of "peasantry" to the PCMR community. If you dislike an OS/service/application, attack the thing you dislike, not the individuals who use it. Some people may not have a choice.
  • Bigotry will not be tolerated.
  • 3. Post Linux-related content
  • Including Unix and BSD.
  • Non-Linux content is acceptable as long as it makes a reference to Linux. For example, the poorly made mockery of sudo in Windows.
  • No porn, no politics, no trolling or ragebaiting.
  • 4. No recent reposts
  • Everybody uses Arch btw, can't quit Vim, <loves/tolerates/hates> systemd, and wants to interject for a moment. You can stop now.

  • The substance of a post should be comprehensible for people who only speak English.
  • Titles and post bodies written in other languages will be allowed, but only as long as the above rule is observed.
  • 6. (NEW!) Regarding public figuresWe all have our opinions, and certain public figures can be divisive. Keep in mind that this is a community for memes and light-hearted fun, not for airing grievances or leveling accusations.

Back to work today. Signed into my windows machine. Had to agree to 3 privacy policies to read my emails/use Edge.

Have the XKCD as a wallpaper to remind me of 'home'.

    [–] Valmond@lemmy.world 5 points 20 hours ago

You could redo that XKCD but with windows today...

I hate everything about this stupid propaganda/publicity stunt.

They took a bunch of rich women, dressed them up in objectifying skintight suits, then flew them to space for 10 minutes in a glorified plane ride on the second richest guy's dick shaped rocket. And we're supposed to be "inspired", meanwhile women who are actual rocket scientists and astronauts are being erased and removed from NASA's web site because "woke dei" or whatever.

    [–] dalekcaan@lemm.ee 59 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Funny thing is, 10 minutes sounds like hyperbole, but after they crossed the line that's internationally recognized as the edge of space they only spent 3 minutes there before returning.

    [–] ShaggySnacks@lemmy.myserv.one 4 points 13 hours ago

Wow! A whole 3 minutes! Better kiss the ground to show my appreciation for the Earth!

Thats it, nobody can do anything now because the US voted for an fat orange turd after running their finances in the worst way they possibly could for the last 50 years?

    [–] Nalivai@lemmy.world 11 points 1 day ago* (last edited 18 hours ago) (1 children)

You're not fair to the brave astronauts^* that did^* the first^* all woman space^* expedition^* ! It was a whole 11 minutes of a glorified plane ride.

    [–] MrsDoyle@sh.itjust.works 13 points 19 hours ago

Meanwhile no-one mentioned Valentina Tereshkova, who orbited Earth 48 times on her own back in 1963. Sigh.

    [–] Shipgirlboy@sh.itjust.works 86 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Some rich fucks went to "space" for a couple minutes in another rich fucks giant penis enlarger.

Even a better summation than this? 😸

    [–] itslilith@lemmy.blahaj.zone 17 points 1 day ago (4 children)

pointless summation, that just simplifies to n(n+1)/2 :P

Or -1/12 if we take the limit as n approaches infinity!

I would have said the same thing until I saw this new meme format.

I’m not gonna pretend that the billions squandered and the environmental damage was worth the meme, but those are sunk costs so at least we get this out of it?

    [–] Chee_Koala@lemmy.world 22 points 1 day ago

We take what we can get, and keep going.

"Ima install windows server edition since I like the C API and I can learn regedit stuff"

    (The most undocumented nightmare imaginable)

    "Never again"

Seriously how did I have harder time connecting to my home wifi than I did connecting to PEAP encrypted university wifi on open fucking bsd.

    [–] gamermanh@lemmy.dbzer0.com 6 points 20 hours ago

Microsoft hides how their server shit works behind their certifications

Source: I've been taught how to use Windows server edition by people who got their certs. I assume it's somewhat a joke, but cannot be certain

    [–] _cryptagion@lemmy.dbzer0.com 101 points 1 day ago (5 children)

You joke, but I attempted to set up a Windows partition back in January so I could play some games on Game Pass, and made it nearly a whole two hours before I wiped the partition and vowed never again.

There were ads on the login screen. And that was just the start! I haven't seen so many ads on a desktop since the early 2000's when I used to fix PCs infected with spyware for people.

    [–] AnUnusualRelic@lemmy.world 32 points 1 day ago

At least back then the ads had naked girls!

    [–] wizardbeard@lemmy.dbzer0.com 42 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Did you just rawdog the home version or something? You gotta use at least some protection man! LTSC Pro install, some debloat scripts... anything but a straight install.

Lord knows what you could have caught!

    [–] nekusoul@lemmy.nekusoul.de 26 points 1 day ago (7 children)

Problem is, there are no good debloat scripts. It's all written by amateurs who don't know what they're doing, messing up the system in subtle ways that then take ages to figure out.

    [–] tauren@lemm.ee 7 points 21 hours ago

And if you are an amateur yourself, you have no means to validate that the scripts aren't harmful.

I helped my son install Windows 10 on a spare SSD for Fortnite. His first comment after booting into Windows: Why is it so ugly?

After the novelty of playing Fortnite wore off he's back to Linux.

    [–] paequ2@lemmy.today 87 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

    he’s back to Linux

^^^ Amazing parenting right here. πŸ‘ πŸ‘ πŸ‘ πŸ‘ Bravo sir.

    [–] pennomi@lemmy.world 37 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Honestly gaming on Linux is so good these days, it’s almost on par with Windows there. Really the only major games that can’t be played are due to anticheat rootkits… which are a security nightmare anyway.

    [–] 3laws@lemmy.world 10 points 22 hours ago (1 children)

I had 5k hours of Linux-exclusive Apex Legends, the only Linux Apex Diamond in my country, I had streaming income and even tournament income. I still miss it but I won't ever go back to Windows gaming even if I doubled my streamer income.

    [–] datavoid@lemmy.ml 6 points 22 hours ago (1 children)

Did they drop Linux support or something?

    [–] 3laws@lemmy.world 10 points 21 hours ago

Almost 2 seasons ago, yes. It's not coming back.

    [–] Valmond@lemmy.world 2 points 20 hours ago

I have a win-box for old 16/32bit games, and there is always a reboot needed or some other crap. Dont get me started on the speed, does it have to call m$ by phone every time I want to launch a program?

    God I love Linux.

Meanwhile, Windows users are landing down, wondering what this strange new planet is. Confused by the Great Filetree, they begin to poke its roots...

Did she really do that? I'm flabbergasted she brought a pamphlet for her upcoming tour and a little flower to hold in front of the camera. This is the first and possibly last time you're going to space, Katy. How vain do you have to be to be holding things in front of a camera? I would be glued to the windows and savoring the sensation of weightlessness.

    [–] Rodneyck@lemm.ee 34 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

She did it and so did Gale King. The only good thing about this whole narcissistic, class-based, photo op ordeal was this meme. The best part is that they trained together for what, 8 months? They spend almost 3 minutes of their 4 minutes in space taking selfies of each other and playing with their devices. I guess they got their $100k a piece worth of PR.

    [–] Jumuta@sh.itjust.works 4 points 23 hours ago

they trained for 8 months? doubt

    [–] rustydrd@sh.itjust.works 22 points 1 day ago

When you're convinced that the world revolves around you, you probably won't have much appreciation for the universe.

I use fusion 360 on windows 11 for work. Then i come home to my linux and it feels right

Windows 11 is awful i hate the UI the ADS and spyware. I debloated as much as i can but i need fusion for CAM/CAD. I bring my lenovo laptop with debian 12 incase i need to do something other than CAD. Why cant autodesk port the POS to Linux

    [–] d_k_bo@feddit.org 10 points 1 day ago

Why cant autodesk port the POS to Linux

I mean, Fusion 360 even runs in a web browser (although it was unusably slow for me). It should be possible to port it to the Linux desktop.
