Entering a trade war against a country that makes laptops when most of your economy is people doing stuff on laptops. Art of the deal.

Damn, I wanted yanks to pay 10k for new iphones

I'm probably overreacting to this, but as someone trapped in this country, living in poverty, already unable to afford anything, I just see this as "I wish things were worse for you". This isn't about a new iphone, I've never had an iPhone or been able to afford one. I don't want one. Comments like this have just been really bothering me. Any time someone bad is happening here, someone will jump in to say basically "oh, good thing I don't live there, haha, americans are so fucked". Like, I get it. America as a country is bad. Or government is evil. The average person here is incredibly stupid and practically frothing at the mouth. But people are so eager to express joy that the bad americans are suffering that they say shit that throws the struggles of those of us trapped here who do not want any of this under the bus

Sorry, but the Global South has totally earned their right to laugh a bit at the US and USians suffering. No one here, as far as I know, is really expressing anything reactionarily anti-proletarian or ecofascist without being called out or having content removed. Most are just poking some fun. What people in the US are going through is what people in the Global South have been going through for decades, if we're not thinking centuries, and in much worse circumstances. And conditions in the US for working people have been better off many times because there were so many people in the Global South who were also stuck and had to deal with their harsh reality back home.

Yeah, there are a lot of working class people getting caught in the crossfire between US hegemony and the Global South. That doesn't mean people can't have some dark humor about the situation and laugh, or some schadenfreude at worst. This feels to me like when White people are upset about PoC saying KKKracKKKer because their family was poor.

But I wanted to say capitalism no iphone

I'm predicting that Democrats take the wrong message from this and continue to ramp up the anti-China messaging. They'll say that Trump is weak on China and that he's Xi's best friend. Democrats will campaign on doing "real tariffs on China" and libs will say "They have to campaign on this, it's what most people want".

step away from the lathe 🔫

[–] Xiisadaddy@lemmygrad.ml 47 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Art of the deal clearly. The deals are artistic. You say "no iphone" then u say "sike"

[–] SexUnderSocialism@hexbear.net 46 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Since communism is when no iPhone, the US came dangerously close to becoming communist until Trump stepped in to save America. so-true

[–] Pastaguini@hexbear.net 22 points 1 week ago

Wow, next they’ll have to go after whoever suggested these tariffs and tried to make it so that no phone in the first place.

[–] null_dot@lemmy.dbzer0.com 37 points 1 week ago (2 children)

The idiocy is breathtaking.

"No need to do anything guys, he'll just flip next time he takes a shit. Let's just be cool and see what happens.

Trump has lost more money than any other person since the dawn of time. The biggest lover in the world.

[–] Carl@hexbear.net 44 points 1 week ago

This shows why he wasn't able to make a casino profitable. Even in a "next quarter" focused business climate you've gotta be able to stick to a plan for at least one whole quarter.

[–] vovchik_ilich@hexbear.net 21 points 1 week ago

Your typo in the last phrase is exquisite, please don't correct it

[–] Fatdork2@hexbear.net 31 points 1 week ago (1 children)

So, everything is exempted then? Because everything's computer

[–] eyyImwalkin@hexbear.net 8 points 1 week ago

Xi's great at cybering my wife

[–] sleeplessone@lemmy.ml 30 points 1 week ago

If we tariff computer, then how can everything keep being computer?

[–] CarbonScored@hexbear.net 22 points 1 week ago (1 children)

A million percent tariff rate (excluding the stuff we need from them so much that we buy it)

[–] bdonvr@thelemmy.club 10 points 1 week ago

It's a theoretical tariff with exemptions for anything you have a receipt for

[–] kittin@hexbear.net 20 points 1 week ago

China officially wins the chip war

[–] WellTheresYourCobbler@hexbear.net 19 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Hehehe getting a framework might not be out of reach just yet

[–] muirc@hexbear.net 11 points 1 week ago

Ordered my treat

[–] SkingradGuard@hexbear.net 7 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (2 children)

Those are so expensive , and they don't even ship everywhere

[–] FumpyAer@hexbear.net 9 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

I've said this before, but framework laptops, while incredibly neat, are also not really that upgradable. A new mainboard is what? 800 more dollars on top of the $1100+ original buy-in? You could buy a whole laptop for $800.

They are very repairable though, that's a nice thing. And thin and light.

[–] WellTheresYourCobbler@hexbear.net 6 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Yeah it’s cost makes it hard to justify even against a used laptop that can’t be upgraded but can still have a long enough life.

[–] SkingradGuard@hexbear.net 6 points 1 week ago (1 children)

If I had the money I'd get one, because idk, I like electronic treats

Yeah I’m still hoping to get a 12 soon which is why this is good news for me even if it’s a shit overall decision

[–] Carl@hexbear.net 18 points 1 week ago (1 children)

[–] OptimusSubprime@hexbear.net 14 points 1 week ago

Hey! Aren't EVs computers on wheels? melon-musk even said so.

That's it! China's EVs are exempt too!

[–] Uranus_Hz@lemm.ee 9 points 1 week ago

His social media tweets aren’t actually policy. No one who is actually supposed to collect tariffs has any idea how much they are supposed to collect nor do they have a way to do so.

[–] 0_o7@lemmy.dbzer0.com 9 points 1 week ago

Move the goal post every so often. While anyone with a brain calls it cheating, the cult thinks you've out-maneuvered everyone else.

[–] Flamangoman@leminal.space 6 points 1 week ago

Everything's computer, checkmate liberals

[–] eyyImwalkin@hexbear.net 6 points 1 week ago
