Image of destruction in Mandalay, Myanmar, from Al Jazeera.

As if the ongoing civil war wasn't enough, Myanmar has now been struck by a very powerful earthquake, resulting in 2000 deaths and thousands more injured as of the time of writing. Estimates are that the death toll could reach 10,000. Infrastructure like roads and bridges are damaged, and the hospitals are overwhelmed. The earthquake struck during Eid prayers, resulting in even higher casualties as several mosques collapsed. 20 million people already required humanitarian assistance in Myanmar, and now the situation there will be even worse. International rescue teams have rushed into the country, and aid is being raised, though with USAID experiencing the... changes that it is, the United States will be of even more limited help than usual. So far, China has sent $14 million, while USAID has supplied $2 million. In Thailand, the death toll seems considerably lower, though there has still been significant damage; a skyscraper under construction collapsed in Bangkok.

Myanmar is located very close to the boundary between the Eurasian and Indian tectonic plates. In particular, the country is divided in two by the north-south oriented Sagaing fault. This fault is typically strike-slip; that is, each side of the fault moves horizontally past each other. The earthquake's depth was 10 kilometers, which is pretty shallow, and its proximity to the surface amplified the felt force of the earthquake. Additionally, the soft soil in this region tends to further amplify seismic waves through a process called liquefaction. Combine all this with the lackluster building codes due to many years of impoverishment and civil wars, and this explains why the death toll, and the expense to the country in general to repair damage, will probably be extremely high.

Sources:

Defense Politics Asia's youtube channel and their map. Their youtube channel has substantially diminished in quality but the map is still useful.
Moon of Alabama, which tends to have interesting analysis. Avoid the comment section.
Understanding War and the Saker: reactionary sources that have occasional insights on the war.
Alexander Mercouris, who does daily videos on the conflict. While he is a reactionary and surrounds himself with likeminded people, his daily update videos are relatively brainworm-free and good if you don't want to follow Russian telegram channels to get news. He also co-hosts The Duran, which is more explicitly conservative, racist, sexist, transphobic, anti-communist, etc when guests are invited on, but is just about tolerable when it's just the two of them if you want a little more analysis.
Simplicius, who publishes on Substack. Like others, his political analysis should be soundly ignored, but his knowledge of weaponry and military strategy is generally quite good.

It still kind of stuns me every time I realize the camp the migrants are being taken to is within driving distance from me. I’ve been in that area many times. Even dated a woman who worked for Bukele when he was mayor of San Salvador. At the time she was convinced that he would solve the crime problem for good and had a personal investment in it after she experienced attempted SA from a gang member. She ended up giving my personal info to his fans years later and they’ve been threatening me since then lol

When it was being built I stopped by to see the site and said it wouldn’t be long before Guatemalans were sent there under the false premise of being related to gangs. Looks like that came true. I should really do a write-up on the Northern Triangle. It’s receiving a lot of attention now and some of the takes make me realize just how little about the region people know.

she was convinced that he would solve the crime problem

Human right violations aside, hasn't the crime problem in El Salvador been majorly improved? Didn't Bukele* (typo) gain like 70% of vote on reelection as a consequence?

yes crime in solved, instead of being shaken down by gangsters, you will now be shaken down by soldiers. mission-accomplished-1 mission-accomplished-2

Literally as soon as they handed me a loaded gun I'd frag every officer or recruiter or whatever in sight. They've already consigned me to death, I'll have it on my terms thanks, and I think I'd like the company of my most patriotic countrymen for the occasion.

Most destructive administration in modern history and the Democrats just beat the record for talking.

Doing it without even having any actual bill to stop is like going to the basketball court on a day off and dancing around in front of the net when the other team isn't there, and then claiming you played great defence. And then losing to the other team when you actually play.

US prosecutors to seek death penalty for Luigi Mangione - BBC

Article

US prosecutors will seek the death penalty for Luigi Mangione, the man accused of shooting dead UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in December.

Attorney General Pam Bondi said in a statement on Tuesday that she had directed federal prosecutors to seek the penalty for the "premeditated, cold-blooded assassination". Mr Thompson was shot dead outside a hotel in New York on 4 December. Police arrested Mr Mangione, 26, days later in Pennsylvania after a nationwide manhunt.

He has pleaded not guilty to state charges, and has yet to enter a plea for separate federal charges. He is currently awaiting trial in a New York prison. In the press release, Bondi said Mr Thompson's murder "was an act of political violence" and that it "may have posed grave risk of death to additional persons" nearby.

Investigators say Mr Mangione was motivated to kill Mr Thompson, 50, because of anger with US healthcare insurance companies. A lawyer for Mr Mangione called the decision "barbaric", accused the government of "defending the broken, immoral, and murderous healthcare industry", and said Mr Mangione was caught in a tug-of-war between state and federal prosecutors.

"While claiming to protect against murder, the federal government moves to commit the pre-meditated, state-sponsored murder of Luigi," said Karen Friedman Agnifilo in a statement. Mr Mangione is facing 11 state criminal counts in New York, including first-degree murder and murder as a crime of terrorism.

If convicted of all the counts, he would face a mandatory sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole. But federal prosecutors have also separately charged Mr Mangione for using a firearm to commit murder and interstate stalking resulting in death. These charges make him eligible for the death penalty.

Prosecutors have said the federal and state cases will move forward parallel with one another. Mr Mangione is being held at the Metropolitan Detention Center (MDC) Brooklyn.

New York prosecutors have already shared some evidence in their case against him, including a positive match of his fingerprints with those discovered at the crime scene.

According to New York District Attorney Alvin Bragg, Mr Mangione arrived in New York City on 24 November and stayed in a Manhattan hostel using a fake ID for 10 days before carrying out the attack against Mr Thompson.

The healthcare boss was shot in the back by a masked assailant on 4 December as he was walking into a hotel where the company he led was holding an investors' meeting. A nationwide search led police to Mr Mangione five days later at a McDonald's hundreds of miles away in Altoona, Pennsylvania.

Police said that when they found Mr Mangione, he was in possession of a ghost gun - a gun assembled from untraceable parts - a fake ID, a passport and a handwritten document indicating "motivation and mindset".

Mr Thompson's killing ignited a wide debate about how the US healthcare system operates. Many Americans, who pay more for healthcare than people in any other country, expressed anger over what they see as unfair treatment by insurance firms.

US Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas said in December that the rhetoric on social media in the wake of the killing was "extraordinarily alarming".

"It speaks of what is really bubbling here in this country, and unfortunately we see that manifested in violence, the domestic violent extremism that exists," he told CBS's Face the Nation.

UN Secretary-General Calls for Urgent Action in South Sudan Amid Rising Violence - Telesur English

ArticleOn Friday morning, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres raised alarms about what he described as a “dramatic and dire situation” in South Sudan. The country has seen an increase in violent clashes that are severely affecting civilians. Notably, on Wednesday night, First Vice President Riek Machar was placed under house arrest, further escalating tensions.

Guterres urged the political leaders of South Sudan to honor their commitments to peace, emphasizing the need to “fully restore the government of national unity” and implement the promises made in the peace agreement. He highlighted that this agreement is the only legal framework for ensuring peaceful, free, and fair elections scheduled for December 2026.

The African Union (AU) is collaborating with the UN to address the crisis. Guterres expressed full support for the AU’s initiative to deploy a panel of wise individuals and acknowledged the efforts of Kenya’s Special Envoy, President William Ruto. “We will be working in close cooperation with the AU,” he stated.

In a heartfelt message directed at South Sudan’s leaders, Guterres implored them to “put down the weapons” and prioritize the well-being of all citizens in South Sudan. Both Salva Kiir, the current president, and Riek Machar, who is currently detained, are historical figures who played pivotal roles in securing South Sudan’s independence from Sudan in 2011.

However, analysts note that despite their collaboration, there is a significant rift between them. Their longstanding feud has intensified over time as Machar awaits his opportunity to assume the presidency while Kiir remains firmly in power.

All the recent attention on El Salvador is a good time to point out that Bukele is Palestinian and likes to position himself as “one of the good ones” referring to Hamas as “animals” and making a point to say that he’s a Christian Palestinian.

Myanmar's military junta updates the death toll from the country's biggest earthquake in decades. There are 2,056 dead, 3,900 injured, more than 270 missing and hundreds homeless. The World Health Organization says that the country's health system has collapsed and rescue teams are struggling to operate in the devastated country, with no roads, bridges or communications.

Elderly people, monks, babies and hundreds of other patients are being treated in parking lots, under makeshift tents. The capital's main hospital has only 1,000 beds for use.

Glen Greenwald on Twitter:Romania banned Calin Georgescu after they invalided his win.

Brazil banned Bolsonaro as he leads Lula in polls.

France now banning Le Pen. Dems tried to ban Trump.

The neoliberal establishment's solution to being hated is to ban their opponents: in the name of democracy.

Is he fucking stupid or just pushing his garbage right-wing agenda? How is Bolsonaro, an actual criminal that attempted to kill Lula and three Supreme Court Judges, similar to Le Pen or Calin Georgescu? How removing Bolsonaro from the election helps the USA? Fuck this guy

[–] Cimbazarov@hexbear.net 1 points 3 months ago

Honestly what is the alternative? We should let them get away with breaking the law? Yanis Varoufakis also had a similar take. While I agree making these people accountable does nothing to stop fascism, I don't understand how this is a bad thing.

Maybe it's just the wrong framing? Like you're not going to stop fascism by just prosecuting the fascists, but I do think it's a start. However I am confident that this will be the limit of how far they go and they will continue pushing neoliberal policies until their population is fed up. If there were an organized left this would be a prime opportunity.

https://breakingthenews.net/Article/ISM:-US-manufacturing-activity-declines-in-March/63837825

The manufacturing activity in the United States returned to contraction in March, with the Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) going from February's 50.3% to 49%, the Institute for Supply Management (ISM) said in its report published on Tuesday.

Month-on-month, the New Orders Index fell from 48.6% to 45.2%. The Production Index decreased by 2.4 percentage points to 48.3%. The Employment Index plunged by 2.9 percentage points to 44.7%. On the other hand, the Prices Index soared by seven percentage points to 69.4%.

"Demand and production retreated and destaffing continued, as panelists’ companies responded to demand confusion. Prices growth accelerated due to tariffs, causing new order placement backlogs, supplier delivery slowdowns and manufacturing inventory growth," ISM Manufacturing Business Survey Committee Chair Timothy R. Fiore commented.

So much for all the bragging the American government did last month: https://www.whitehouse.gov/articles/2025/03/manufacturing-is-roaring-back-under-president-donald-j-trump/

“In one month under President Trump, the American economy is soaring back to greatness after the economic calamity left by Joe Biden. The manufacturing industry is already rebounding as there were 9,000 new auto jobs created — the most auto jobs added in 15 months! Under President Trump, the private sector is leading the way — 93% of the job gains in February were in the private sector. This is great news for American workers and families. The Trump Administration will continue to work hard to implement pro-growth policies and push Congress to enact the Trump Economic Agenda.” — Karoline Leavitt, White House Press Secretary

Today’s jobs report shows American manufacturing is on the rebound thanks to President Donald J. Trump and his administration.
