Summary

Donald Trump’s administration cut major counter-terrorism research programs across agencies, sparking warnings from experts that the move will weaken U.S. defenses against far-right violence.

Cuts include $30m for academic studies, DHS funding for the University of Maryland’s terrorism and hate crime database, and the DOJ’s radicalization research.

Experts say this erases years of progress, undermines Trump’s pledges to fight antisemitism, and shifts focus away from the primary domestic threat: far-right extremism.

The FBI has also redirected resources toward gangs and leftist groups, raising safety concerns among researchers.

Pretty sure that’s the point

Yeah, that was already ahown last time with the proudboys and all the groups in J6... And it's why Musk was doing Nazi signalling.

Those groups and sub groups will eventually be his brown shirts or red guard.

[–] Ryktes@lemm.ee 4 points 5 days ago

He already has his res guard. It's called ICE. Or did you not notice all the stories of american citizens getting blackbagged in broad daylight?

[–] hperrin@lemmy.world 54 points 6 days ago (1 children)

That’s because Donald Trump is a far right extremist.

[–] qprimed@lemmy.ml 10 points 5 days ago (2 children)

trump really has no ideology beyond self-aggrandizement, gross displays of power and pursuing the path of least resistance (appealing to the most stupid). thats it. that the whole ballgame.

this left/right narrative fails to accurately describe this putrid creature.

[–] hperrin@lemmy.world 8 points 5 days ago

Trump acts like a far right extremist, therefore, Trump is a far right extremist.

If it walks like a duck, and it quacks like a duck…

puh-leeze. He ran as a Republican for a reason. He needs to make use of the far-right and their stupid grievances, yes, but he also has most of the very same grievances.

He was outraged over Obama being in office. He was king of the birthers. He was outraged over the monuments to the terrorist traitors in the Confederacy being take down. He still is - he vows to put them back.

Let's not pretend he has truly no ideology. He definitely has one. It's an ideology centered around rich white cishet male (nominally xtian) privilege. And even though he was raised in the North, he has a distinctly Southern view about what America should be about.

He was a Democrat for a long time before switching sides. He doesn't care about ANYTHING other than himself and maaaaaaybe hurting brown people. Taking care of other rich people serves him. Taking care of Christians serves him, because he knows they can get him reelected. Lowering taxes serves him, and he doesn't care who it hurts.

The only thing he has been consistent about, even when he was a Democrat, is hurting brown people. Everything else is an act to get people to do things that help him.

Whoa, I bet he never thought of that...

Actually chances are he sees these groups as good patriotic muricans fighting all the right battles so even without the cuts he would have ordered to stop targeting them, this is just a less obvious way to the same goal.

[–] RangerJosey@lemmy.ml 15 points 6 days ago

As if that wasn't the point.

[–] LandedGentry@lemmy.zip 14 points 6 days ago

Unleashed them all with pardons, removed the forces that can bring them back to prison.

[–] aesthelete@lemmy.world 11 points 5 days ago

Exactly the point

"It's not a bug, it's a feature"

"Trump's counter-terror cuts will harm fight against Trump and his allies"

[–] wanderwisley@lemm.ee 6 points 5 days ago

This will not end badly at allllll.

[–] CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world 3 points 5 days ago

That's been on the unhinged far right to-do list ever since GWB's admin found that the biggest threat to America is right wing extremism.

The incoming Obama admin had it buried because of all the POUTRAGE from the teabagger, oops, now I guess they are rebranded as magoff, wing of the party.

But the resentful babies never forgot.
