Despite the shortcomings presented in the video, I am still impressed by the OS overall, and the fact that the phone is so affordable really puts it on my list for the next phone tbh 😁

Also, the OS itself looks wonderful

I love it. But this part on their website has me scratching my head:

"Your purchase includes a 12-month Sailfish OS full license subscription valued at €59.88 (€4.99/month), granting access to all releases, commercial components, and feature upgrades. After the first year, you can choose to continue your subscription and support Sailfish OS development further. Even without renewal, your device will continue to function, but future software updates and commercial component upgrades will not be available."

So does this mean they will be cutting the security updates or just feature updares? Because cutting security updates after a year is a bit of a dick move.

I get that you can always apply patches yourself but ... it rubs me the wrong way.

Or you know, install a different distro...

I don't imagine there are many alternatives?

If nobody adapted one of the mobile distros, and that would be the first thing I check before buying.

Why is there so little info of this phone online? When you google it the link to their own website for it 404s. And on their website there’s no link to the specs, just buy it now.

No way, Jolla is actually still around, that takes me back!
Doesn't look too bad, though it probably makes more sense to use Sailfish OS on any other (used?) supported device

This seems really strange as it requires a subscription.. Didn't really understand and seems pretty sketchy... If someone has an idea? ¯_(ツ)_/¯

@foremanguy92_ They probably found no other way to monetize its development.

But for me an open source project that locks security and features behind a paywall, moreover a subscription is a complete no-go!

I just gave this a cursory look a while back and re-checked it now... what's free about it? available for their in-house model and some xperia models? and they want money for a licence? found no forks of the thing and their github doesn't have the source, or I suck at searching.

hated the video you posted, beyond terrible with bad production choices, jumping all over the place. once the author allows the scene to last more than 3 seconds, the janky-ness of the UI is apparent.

them jolla dudes need to really opensource this thing so that it runs on the widest possible hardware and get a chance of becoming relevant, as we need mobile OS alternatives; postmarketOS is nowhere close to being usable.
