Rules (interactive)

Rule 1- All posts must begin with TIL. Linking to a source of info is optional, but highly recommended as it helps to spark discussion.

** Posts must be about an actual fact that you have learned, but it doesn't matter if you learned it today. See Rule 6 for all exceptions.**

Rule 2- Your post subject cannot be illegal or NSFW material.

Your post subject cannot be illegal or NSFW material. You will be warned first, banned second.

Rule 3- Do not seek mental, medical and professional help here.

Do not seek mental, medical and professional help here. Breaking this rule will not get you or your post removed, but it will put you at risk, and possibly in danger.

Rule 4- No self promotion or upvote-farming of any kind.

That's it.

Rule 5- No baiting or sealioning or promoting an agenda.

Posts and comments which, instead of being of an innocuous nature, are specifically intended (based on reports and in the opinion of our crack moderation team) to bait users into ideological wars on charged political topics will be removed and the authors warned - or banned - depending on severity.

Rule 6- Regarding non-TIL posts.

Provided it is about the community itself, you may post non-TIL posts using the [META] tag on your post title.

Rule 7- You can't harass or disturb other members.

If you vocally harass or discriminate against any individual member, you will be removed.

Likewise, if you are a member, sympathiser or a resemblant of a movement that is known to largely hate, mock, discriminate against, and/or want to take lives of a group of people, and you were provably vocal about your hate, then you will be banned on sight.

Let everyone have their own content.

After 1979 -

The hippie trail largely ended in the late 1970s primarily due to both the Iranian Revolution resulting in an anti-Western government, and the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, closing the route to Western travelers.

I mean before the revolution Iran had a CIA-installed puppet government so... Yeah.

[–] jmcs@discuss.tchncs.de 28 points 3 days ago

Facism ruing everything, fascists replacing fascists ruin everything squared.

[–] TheBat@lemmy.world 6 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Which was fairly progressive...

[–] B312@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago (2 children)

only in the capital and major cities

[–] pyre@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

that's how countries generally work. the educated and the open minded move to cities while the reactionary either stay where they are or run to less populated areas to minimize exposure to outside opinions.

[–] Kusimulkku@lemm.ee 1 points 2 days ago

I guess that's better than nothing but yeah

[–] jagged_circle@feddit.nl 6 points 3 days ago

Europeans still use it

[–] miseducator@lemmy.world 8 points 3 days ago

Was fixing to muse about the Iranian revolution putting a stop to folks just passing through. Makes sense.

If you're there and you're full of zombie and you meet a strange lady, don't be nervous. She'll take you in and make you breakfast.

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 5 points 3 days ago

Of course, if you ever get out of there, you're going to Kathmandu.

[–] jagged_circle@feddit.nl 1 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Pretty sure thats a different continent

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 1 points 3 days ago

I hope the concept of humor comes to your world someday. We quite enjoy it on this planet.

Wdym before? People still take the hippie trail. Just US Americans can't because Iran doesn't let citizens of terrorist countries enter

[–] angrystego@lemmy.world 21 points 3 days ago (1 children)

My friends hitchhiked from Western Europe to India succefully in 2006.

[–] superkret@feddit.org 6 points 3 days ago (2 children)

Way too many people believe you're going to get robbed, kidnapped, or killed 100% if you ever travel outside US-allied nations.

Women should be concerned (at least when traveling alone through the middle east/Africa/India). Guys, not as much.

[–] phdepressed@sh.itjust.works 26 points 3 days ago (1 children)

And Europe. Tate went to Romania specifically for lax sex crime laws and enforcement.

Gendered violence occurs everywhere. More likely by right extremists and areas with them. You are just unlikely to hear about any near you unless it is particularly egregious.

[–] Kusimulkku@lemm.ee 2 points 2 days ago

I'd be a bit more worried in the mentioned places than in Europe though.

The only bad thing that happened to them on the way was diarrhea - which sucks, but after a few days' stop at a pakistani hospital (one guy lost too much liquid and had to get an infusion) they continued happily.

[–] TIN@feddit.uk 20 points 3 days ago (2 children)

Couldn't you now do that but go higher, Armenia, Azerbaijan, and then the central Asian -stans into Pakistan? Avoids both Iran and Afghanistan.

[–] tychosmoose@lemm.ee 32 points 3 days ago (1 children)

You could, except that Azerbaijan has kept their land borders closed for entry since covid. You can depart on land, and you can arrive or depart by air, but you cannot arrive by land.

[–] TIN@feddit.uk 14 points 3 days ago (2 children)

Interesting. Are you allowed to jump over the border and claim that as by air?!

Is there a reason for the closure, do you know?

[–] tychosmoose@lemm.ee 16 points 3 days ago

Stated reasons are safety and security. They are officially still in a health quarantine, but the leadership has expressed that the security situation has been better with no migrants, and so it continues. The opposition and neighbor states disagree.

A spicy near-land entry by air is sure to lead to an even spicier exit procedure when the visa is checked!

The only ways to get around the Caspian involve Russia or Iran, unless you plan on going across it. Does a ferry count as hitchhiking?

[–] Crumbgrabber@lemm.ee 6 points 3 days ago (1 children)

We need hot dog carts every 100-300 feet through this route. Let's proceed on this project immediately.

[–] Tudsamfa@lemmy.world 3 points 3 days ago

I can see a few problems with getting pork sausages delivered to these regions, but I'm sure the Taliban will acquiesce given the importance.
