If I were establishing a new country and that was a native animal, that bad motherfucker is going on my flag.

Find yourself someone who loves you as much as aardwoof loves aardwolves ❤️

[–] ouRKaoS@lemmy.today 23 points 5 months ago (2 children)

That thing looks like it's either chill as fuck or a complete spaz. I'm not sure which...

[–] SkaveRat@discuss.tchncs.de 8 points 5 months ago

Both in varying frequencies

[–] SendMePhotos@lemmy.world 7 points 5 months ago

Looks like Honeybadger has evolved.

[–] Gormadt@lemmy.blahaj.zone 19 points 5 months ago

Ah yes, hair metal dog

I love this critter

[–] supersquirrel@sopuli.xyz 15 points 5 months ago (1 children)

I am assuming it is not in fact actually closely related to a wolf/dog?

Also, this has got me very curious what just a "vark" looks like given the suggested naming scheme going on here.

[–] abbadon420@lemm.ee 24 points 5 months ago (2 children)

Both names come from Afrikaans, but the animals are not in any way related. The aardwolf is related to the hyena. It's the hyenas friendly cousin. It mostly eats termites and it's not dangerous. The aardvark lmhas a pig like nose and it burrows like a pig, so "vark" means pig in Afrikaans. The aardvark has no other relation to a pig besides the name.

ah, so "vark" is much like "dog" in english when it is used in animal names like "prairie dog"!

thanks for explaining!

I was gonna say "pig-wolf" sounds kind of goofy but it is actually pretty precise in behavioral desciption then isn't it?

Should be noted that "aard" means "ground/earth"

Interesting, doesn't ard also mean "ground/earth" in Arabic? Maybe one of those words that made into the indo-german languages by the Arabic conquest?

[–] myrrh@ttrpg.network 1 points 5 months ago

...by contrast to airwolf...

[–] ryedaft@sh.itjust.works 4 points 5 months ago

The aardvark also mainly eats termites. Both species are nocturnal and rest in dens and burrows during the day. So similar behaviours and ecological niches so very fair to give them similar names.

The hyena family is also closer related to felines than canids. Fun fact there.

[–] queermunist@lemmy.ml 15 points 5 months ago

Eats insects, apparently.

[–] happybadger@hexbear.net 11 points 5 months ago

Nature designed this creature to receive scritches.

[–] RizzRustbolt@lemmy.world 9 points 5 months ago

The 80s hairmetal band of the animal kingdom.

[–] radix@lemmy.world 8 points 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago)

Awww, the tiger-coyote thinks he's a stegosaurus.

[–] LovableSidekick@lemmy.world 8 points 5 months ago

Basically an 80s punk dog.

[–] Ephera@lemmy.ml 7 points 5 months ago

Damn, this guy looks like he's about to sing an 80s power ballad.

[–] rf_@lemmy.world 6 points 5 months ago

Super Saiyan Dog

[–] luciole@beehaw.org 5 points 5 months ago (1 children)

That captive aardwolf is scared though. They're not ordinarily puffed up like this. A chill aardwolf is a smooth, slender boi.

[–] Tattorack@lemmy.world 4 points 5 months ago

That's the most punk looking animal I've ever seen.

[–] inv3r5ion@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 5 months ago

That Mohawk is fucking sick

[–] Deceptichum@quokk.au 3 points 5 months ago

Those are some hackles.

[–] selokichtli@lemmy.ml 2 points 5 months ago

[–] Manifish_Destiny@lemmy.world 1 points 5 months ago

Clearly theyve never seen those Pakistani bears.
