Google, Apple, Intel, NVIDIA, and Tesla exist as global behemoths because of substantial, sustained, research spending by the US government and non-profits to kickstart innovations as building blocks for these companies to develop into a final end product. Same goes for companies like Samsung and their native country. We can't trust Indonesian billionaires to willingly open a non-profit dedicated to advancing technology, so if we want to replicate this in Indonesia, the government has to take a leading role.

I'll give an example; the white paper for MapReduce cites many papers that were the result of some government funded research.

Another example is how well developed we are in geothermal exploration technology and knowledge, because ESDM poured substantial money into researching exactly that. We are also extremely well developed in aquaculture, once again from substantial BRIN and KKP research investment which was crucial in the founding of eFishery.

What if we spend a lot of research money into supporting the R&D of lets' say Evercoss so that company becomes a leader in smartphone technology and not just an assembler of outdated smartphone parts?
