A place to post new communities all over Lemmy for discovery and promotion.

Rules

The rules for behavior are a straight carry over of Mastodon.World's rules. You can click the link but we've reposted them here in brief, as a guideline. We will continue to use the Mastodon.World rules as the master list. Over all, be nice to each other and remember this isn't a community built around debate. For the rules about formatting your posts, scroll down to number 2.

1. Follow the rules of Mastodon.world, which can be found here.

A. Provide an inclusive and supportive environment. This means if it isn't rulebreaking and we can't be supportive to them then we probably shouldn't engage.

B. No illegal content.

C. Use content warnings where appropriate. This means mark your submissions NSFW if need be.

D. No uncivil behavior. This includes, but is not limited to: Name Calling; Bullying; Trolling; Disruptive Commenting; or Personal Criticisms.

E. No Harrassment. As an example in relation to Transgender people this includes, deadnaming, misgendering, and promotion of conversion therapy. Similarly Misogyny, Misandry, and Racism are also banned here.

2. Include a community or instance title and description in your post title. - A following example of this would be New Communities - A place to post new communities or instances all over Lemmy for discovery and promotion.

3. Follow the formatting. - The formatting as included below is important for people getting universal links across Lemmy as easily as possible.

Formatting

Please include this following format in your post:

[link text](/c/community@instance.com)

This provides a link that should work across instances, but in some cases it won't

You should also include either:

!community@instance.com

or instance.com/c/community

FAQ:

Q: Why do I get a 404?

A: At least one user in an instance needs to search for a community before it gets fetched. Searching for the community will bring it into the instance and it will fetch a few of the most recent posts without comments. If a user is subscribed to a community, then all of the future posts and interactions are now in-sync.

Q: When I try to create a post, the circle just spins forever. Why is that?

A: This is a current known issue with large communities. Sometimes it does get posted, but just continues spinning, but sometimes it doesn't get posted and continues spinning. If it doesn't actually get posted, the best thing to do is try later. However, only some people seem to be having this problem at the moment.

Just remember a few weeks ago people complaining about memes communities being overwhelmed with political content, so thought this one could use some promotion

top 22 comments
sorted by: hot top controversial new old

""""Memes""""" that are actually just barely disguised political opinions.

I need some humor in my life that doesn't blend with political current events.

Thank you. πŸ™

Personally, I agree with the statement that politcs are invading a lot of memes communities. Just had a look at !whitepeopletwitter@sh.itjust.works (also, did we really have to keep that name), one meme was about a nice joke with a "made my boyfriend a goblin keychain", the top post is about Republicans claiming they supported Obama.

[–] threelonmusketeers@sh.itjust.works 2 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

also, did we really have to keep that name

!microblogmemes@lemmy.world is right there. Should we consolidate?

[–] Blaze@feddit.org 6 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

I just had a look, third post is an Elon Musk tweet.

I feel like sometimes those communities aren't really funny memes, it's just screenshots of tweets to convey a message.

And that's fine, but I guess !funny@sh.itjust.works can try to focus more on genuinely funny content.

If you want to suggest consolidation, feel free, but for reasons stated above I'm not that interested into microblogging communities anyway

[–] threelonmusketeers@sh.itjust.works 2 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

I agree that c/funny should stay separate. But I don't see a huge distinction between the content on whitepeopletwitter and microblogmemes. Might as well go with the name which is broader and less racially charged.

[–] Blaze@feddit.org 4 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Yes, but on the other hand microblogmemes is on LW...

[–] threelonmusketeers@sh.itjust.works 2 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (1 children)

LW can have some communities, as a treat, no? :)

If not, someone can just create !microblogmemes@lemm.ee

[–] Blaze@feddit.org 2 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Do as you wish, I don't really care about this kind of communities that much πŸ˜„

[–] threelonmusketeers@sh.itjust.works 2 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Haha, neither do I, really. These kinds of communities fall into the category of "five big websites all posting screenshots of the other four". I'd rather spend my efforts to grow more niche communities. :)

Two genders: Men and Political

Two races: White and political

Two orientations: Straight and political

Sorry but if you sweep it under the rug then your moderation is derelict of it's duty / irresponsible or indeed potentially lethal.

Plenty of women, non-white and gay (and also trans, autistic, etc. etc.) people do not enjoy constantly being bombarded with politics, even if it relates to their immediate struggles.

Most people just need a chill place to have fun and distract for a second from worldly problems. Please, do not deny them that and let everyone choose their level of exposure to the political content.

How is this funny (which I assume is the initial goal of the community it was posted in)?

I am well aware of the issues you mention, but I'm suggesting to have a space where those topics are not the focus.

As stated in the sidebar, there are enough communities on Lemmy to discuss those issues

[–] VerticaGG@lemmy.blahaj.zone -4 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Nice try but again just because you dont like it, doesnt mean your censorship will result in anything other than silencing marginalized people's perspectives, while allowing the status quo to go unchecked. Everything's political.

Attached image addresses noone specifically, but rather that dynamic and faux-enlightenment.

silencing marginalized people’s perspectives

Lemmy.world top of the day (https://lemmy.world/?dataType=Post&listingType=All&sort=TopDay)

  • first post about pirates and history
  • green text criticizing consumerism in PC gaming: political
  • late stage capitalism post about the 1%: political
  • 196 meme about being laid off: political
  • green text about Harry Potter
  • comic about getting a child and learning them life
  • post about Trump and the Washington Post cartoonist: political
  • shitpost about captcha
  • political meme about Trump and Elon in Lotr scene: political
  • screenshot about abortion: political
  • shitpost about not being able to afford hunting gear: political
  • screenshot about Grok, the Musk AI, name origin: political
  • comic how hard life is and only leads to death: political
  • 196 meme about anxiety: political

  • meme about Republicans, climate change and the Titanic: political
  • greentext about washing chicken
  • shitpost about a hotdog picture
  • wholesome meme
  • meme about 14 years old in the middle ages

Out of the top 20 posts of the day, 11 are political.

Do you really think that having a single community that would not have political content can be considered censorship, and would impact the amount of political content available on this platform?

I skimmed though the article you linked, and I would agree we should avoid faux-enlightenment if applied to the whole platform. Here, it is only about one single community, which will definitely be dwarfed by the rest of the political communities.

[–] Solumbran@lemmy.world -2 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Politics are becoming more and more of the center of a lot of issues, of course it's going to be everywhere. Just like if a comet is about to hit earth and you complain about all communities talking about it, even if unrelated.

Your stance is looking a lot like enlightened centrism at this point, and that's definitely not a good thing.

[–] Blaze@feddit.org 10 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

I'm well aware politics are more prevalent than ever, but does that mean they have to be everywhere?

If a comet was about to hit earth, would you look at it non-stop or would you sleep from time to time to rest from the issue at hand?

And I'm not even touching about the fact that it's US politics that are getting posted everywhere. A large size of the Lemmy population are not US citizens, getting flooded with politics from another country isn't really something people are enthusiastic about.

[–] ZDL@ttrpg.network 4 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

This right here is most especially tedious to me: all the "politics" discussion really meaning "American political obsessions". There's only 350 million or so Americans and yet they act as if their politics are all that matters to the remaining 7.7 billion or so of us.

[–] Blaze@feddit.org 4 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Oh definitely. !asklemmy@lemmy.world banning US politics discussions is a good sign.

Hopefully over time people will hear about !AskUSA@discuss.online

[–] ZDL@ttrpg.network -1 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

I've been tempted to go there a few times, but then I realized the only question I'd have is "WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK IS WRONG WITH ALL Y'ALL!?" and decided that would be unproductive.

[–] Blaze@feddit.org 3 points 2 weeks ago

At least you know it exists, so that's a positive
