An unofficial chapter of the popular Dull Men's Club.

https://dullmensclub.com/

1. Relevant commentary on your own dull life. Posts should be about your own dull, lived experience. This is our most important rule. Direct questions, random thoughts, comment baiting, advice seeking, many uses of "discuss" rarely comply with this rule.

2. Original, Fresh, Meaningful Content.

3. Avoid repetitive topics.

4. This is not a search engine or advice forum.
Use a search engine, a tradesperson, Reddit, friends, a specialist Facebook group, apps, Wikipedia, an AI chat, a reverse image search etc. to answer simple questions, identify objects or get advice. We accept very few questions, and they must be over topics much more difficult than what is easily discoverable with a search. Also see rule 1, “comment baiting”.

5. Keep it dull. If it puts us to sleep, it’s on the right track. Examples of likely not dull: jokes, gross stuff (including toes), politics, religion, royalty, illness or injury, killing things for fun, or promotional content. Feel free to post these elsewhere.

6. Not hate speech, sexism, or bullying No sexism, hate speech, degrading or excessively foul language, or other harmful language. No othering or dehumanizing of anyone or negativity towards any gender identity.

7. Proofread before posting. Use good grammar and punctuation. Avoid useless phrases. Some examples: - starting a post with "So" - starting a post with pointless phrases, like "I hope this is allowed" or “this is my first post” Only share good quality, cropped images. Do not share screenshots of images; share the original image.

8. All polls must have an "Africa, by Toto" option. Why? Because we hear the drums echoing tonight.

Cross-posted from "Lots of ice on the car this morning" by @multicolorKnight@lemmy.world in !asklemmy@lemmy.world

It went from rain to snow overnight, got even colder, and froze hard. This morning there were about 2 inches of very rough ice on the car. For some reason, it always collects the most at the bottom of the windshield, right where it's most important to see. The ice was about as hard as the glass.

I broke one scraper trying to clean it, started the engine and left the defroster on for a few minutes. After driving around for a while, and one mighty crash as the glacier on the roof let go, you would hardly know it was there at all.

I have a garage bay I could use, but it's full of other stuff, and I only park the car in there during disaster level storms.

Can anyone recommend a decent telescoping scraper? Mine is trash.

I usually just spritz it with isopropyl alcohol and leave it for a few minutes, and when I come back it's mostly melted off.

Don't spray your door seals, though, if you can help it. It can make them dry and crack.

I am very happy to have a PHEV during winter in Sweden, I can run the defroster for ten min without running the petrol engine so I don't break the law about idling longer than one min.

Sure, it takes time, but it gets the job done.

Oh, nice. I've just got a regular hybrid, so the heat works the same as with a regular combustion-only car (no fancy heat pump or resistance heater).

Last year, I decided to try something "clever" and ran an extension cord, put a hair dryer on the dash, and let that defrost it lol. Took about 10 minutes, but it worked! When it's that icy out, it usually takes the engine at least 10 minutes to warm up enough to even start defrosting, so that was a win.

Have you tried a windshield cover? Not overly difficult to install and some include side mirror covers too. We don't get much snow/ice where I'm at but they're not much more than scraper so worth the investment.

@multicolorKnight@lemmy.world Crossposted that here since it seemed like a good fit

Precisely where it was intended to go, thank you.
