Idk why I never heard of this one before but it got an update recently so it appeared in my Droid-ify feed and now I'm sharing it. Hopefully someone finds it useful.

you probably heard of "simple dialer". Fossify apps are forks of simple (because simple is sold to an advertisement company)

long story short ๐Ÿ‘†

Real sad what happened there.

Yes, I get that people need to eat, but goddamn it man THERE ARE OTHER WAYS TO GET MONEY THAN SELLING OUT.

[โ€“] Grass@sh.itjust.works 10 points 3 weeks ago (3 children)

at least push one last update that warns the users

[โ€“] lemmeBe@sh.itjust.works 3 points 2 weeks ago

On a side note, if anyone uses Omnivore, I discovered yesterday that they have sold out as well (to an AI startup). We got a 2 weeks notice to export our stuff because accounts will be deleted.

Details here

I don't believe that the lack of a warning was an honest mistake. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Best we can do is remember the name "Tibor Kaputa" and avoid his apps that might pop up in the future. ๐Ÿ•ณ

[โ€“] peregus@lemmy.world 2 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Damn, I didn't know! When did that happen? By the way, I've just noticed that the Simple apps haven't been updated for about a year.

[โ€“] Stomata@buddyverse.one 7 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Fdroid version is old because their newer versions are not open source anymore. So don't use them

[โ€“] peregus@lemmy.world 5 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Oh, so theycve abandoned the open source version :( I'm switching all my simple apps to Fossify.

[โ€“] merde@sh.itjust.works 4 points 2 weeks ago

export from simple, import to fossify

at least the switch is easy :)

[โ€“] danielquinn@lemmy.ca 12 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

I used this for a while, but every time my phone rang I had to type in my pin to answer it which was a deal breaker for me.

[โ€“] GolfNovemberUniform@lemmy.ml 6 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Hmm I'm not sure if it's the expected behavior. Probably you didn't have some permissions enabled?

[โ€“] danielquinn@lemmy.ca 3 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

Could be. I do remember trying to get it to work a number of ways at the time. If you're telling me that this isn't the case for you though, I might try it out again.

[โ€“] merde@sh.itjust.works 4 points 3 weeks ago

it isn't the case for me

[โ€“] GolfNovemberUniform@lemmy.ml 1 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

I haven't tried the app much myself. I'll try it later and tell you if I have time.

[โ€“] danielquinn@lemmy.ca 2 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Well I just tried it again, and while it won't let me take a screen shot on the lock screen, it's definitely still the case for me. It just sits there ringing with the pattern lock on the screen and a little "Return to call" button at the bottom of the screen.

Hmm I guess we found a reason why there are almost no dialer apps for Android.

[โ€“] solrize@lemmy.world 7 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Is there some obstacle to writing them? Special SDK privileges or anything like that? Seems like a good thing to degoogle if possible.

[โ€“] GolfNovemberUniform@lemmy.ml 9 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

I have no idea but apparently nobody makes dialer apps. What's even more weird is that SMS and contacts apps are way less rare.

[โ€“] solrize@lemmy.world 8 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Contacts and dialer should maybe be merged. It's nice to be able to call someone and make notes in that person's contact page during the call.

[โ€“] GolfNovemberUniform@lemmy.ml 0 points 3 weeks ago (3 children)

Don't remember seeing contacts and dialer being completely merged. Maybe it's for performance reasons idk.

[โ€“] Cheradenine@sh.itjust.works 4 points 3 weeks ago

There is Open Contacts which also acts as a dialer if you want it too. It creates its own database which could be useful if you don't want other apps to have your contacts.

It works fine, I use that or Koler

[โ€“] merde@sh.itjust.works 3 points 3 weeks ago

iirc, out of the box android contacts was also the dialer

[โ€“] solrize@lemmy.world 1 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

We have supercomputers in our phones. They can handle it.

Wrong approach, mister/miss.

[โ€“] desktop_user@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

please tell me if you find any open source MMS apps (was more relevant pre RCS, but I still want to see how to actually do it)

[โ€“] Yaky@slrpnk.net 2 points 2 weeks ago

Fossify Messages and QKSMS/QUIK (unmaintained but has worked well for years)

[โ€“] Stomata@buddyverse.one 4 points 3 weeks ago

Or you can try The calyxOS Dialer. It's little bit different than AOSP Dialer. To get it add calyx institute Fdroid repo on droid-ify and install it from there.

[โ€“] DragonsInARoom@lemmy.world 3 points 2 weeks ago

Use this as daily driver, can recommend

[โ€“] peregus@lemmy.world 3 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

What bothers me is that there is no way to answer a call using the phone when BT earphones are connected. It's 2024, how's that possible? It happens that I leave them in another room and I may forget that they are connected and when I answer I don't ear anything, damnit!

By the way, even though I've always wandered why changing the dialer, I'm gonna try it!

[โ€“] Boomkop3@reddthat.com 4 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

The stupid thing is that the aosp dailer is great

[โ€“] GolfNovemberUniform@lemmy.ml 1 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)
[โ€“] Boomkop3@reddthat.com 1 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Oh right, only a matter of time before google makes android even less backwards compatible. To be fair tho, there's not much about a dailer to be updated

[โ€“] GolfNovemberUniform@lemmy.ml 2 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

there's not much about a dailer to be updated

Well security and UI are important.

[โ€“] Boomkop3@reddthat.com 2 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Security, yes. Let's hope there aren't nay cve's found in it. ui... meh, I've had the same style dailer for over a decade

[โ€“] GolfNovemberUniform@lemmy.ml 1 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

I've had the same style dailer for over a decade

Wow, mister/miss, you got some real willpower there. I can't stand old UI like at all.

[โ€“] Boomkop3@reddthat.com 2 points 2 weeks ago

I prefer things work, I don't care if it's ugly
