Asked over the weekend if a second Trump administration would defund the health care organization, Vance said, “On the question of defunding Planned Parenthood, look, I mean our view is we don’t think that taxpayers should fund late-term abortions. That has been a consistent view of the Trump campaign the first time around. It will remain a consistent view.”

Nobody is having an elective late-term abortion. Nobody is going to Planned Parenthood for late-term abortions.

Late-term abortions are exceedingly rare, and always come as the result of a crisis pregnancy which would result in far greater tragedy without the abortion.

In addition, Planned Parenthood isn’t just an abortion clinic. It’s much more, providing crucial anonymous and free healthcare to the communities it serves.

Here’s a debunking article from 2017, after Republicans were lying about it:

Planned Parenthood served 2.4 million people last year and provided 328,348 abortions, according to its annual report. That works out to 13.7 percent of patients.

eta: that leaves nearly 90% of their patients seeking non-abortive care. I don’t know if it’s the same today, but in my day, they were the major non-school, community sex-Ed advocacy group.

The remainder received services including cancer screenings, sexually transmitted infection testing and contraception. Nationally, STI testing and contraception were a part of more than 7 million visits. […] Nationally, Planned Parenthood provided 9,419 “prenatal services" and 2,889 adoption referrals in 2016.

In many places, they’re amongst the only free, anonymous providers of reproductive healthcare that young people can turn to for preventative education and care, pregnancy wellness, family planning, and yes, abortion.

It’s disheartening they’re under attack again. In 2024.

e: inclusivity: they provide men’s reproductive services, too! Thanks @Nougat & @FuglyDuck!

Also I'm pretty sure there's already law on the books barring Planned Parenthood from using funds given to them by the federal government on abortion services so taxpayers already aren't funding abortions from them.

[–] LillyPip@lemmy.ca 40 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Huh, I didn’t know that. It looks like you’re right:

A federal law, the Hyde Amendment [1977], is already in place to block federal funding from going to abortion services and PPWP is audited annually to verify our compliance.

So this is even more performative and vindictive than it seemed at first glance. Thanks for pointing that out!

Which is real fucking rich after the debate where he pretended to be in favor of providing more resources for people wanting to start a family - the exact thing you would strip away if you stopped funding Planned Parenthood.

I'd find the people falling for this grift comically dumb if we weren't headed full steam ahead into an election that could be decided by just a handful of ignorant rubes.

[–] ironhydroxide@sh.itjust.works 6 points 1 month ago

But that's only of you think he cares about starting a healthy family. He wants people to suffer, have babies that then may grow up poor so they can suffer in the grinder that is capitalism, and if they don't grow up then their parents suffer more under said grinder with the healthcare costs further feeding the 1%.

[–] Nougat@fedia.io 29 points 1 month ago

Don't forget that men can go to Planned Parenthood for a wide variety of services, too!

[–] FuglyDuck@lemmy.world 23 points 1 month ago (2 children)

not just women. men can get checked out there to, tested for STDs and such like.

[–] sarcasticsunrise@lemmy.world 20 points 1 month ago

Man here. Tested positive for HSV-2 after being drugged and assaulted. Planned Parenthood helped me through this horrible time in my life and does to this day providing the Herpes suppressing medication that I have to take everyday for the rest of my life.

I couldn't have begun to feel normal again without Planned Parenthood. I know for certain that I wouldn't have had the confidence to begin a relationship of any kind with my amazing Wife of two years while battling this on my own. Straight cis men like me owe a lot to PP; I literally would not be the man I am without their help.

No worries. It just annoys me how many men I know don't realize they can get checked out at a planned parenthood and potentially save their partners trouble. especially the ones who are more active than others.

[–] LillyPip@lemmy.ca 7 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

Men, definitely.. They do cancer screening, and men tend to be squeamish about prostrate exams (& I don’t blame them; I feel someone should pay me for my mammograms, not the other way round)), and ‘free’ & ‘anonymous’ removes a couple of hurdles.

e: ‘definitely’, not ‘too’. Weed kicked in as I started this comment. Sorry.

The cynic in me thinks that's kind of the point. It's bad for their lobbyist friends to have there be an alternative that doesn't involve shoveling one's life savings into the privatized healthcare system.

eta: that leaves nearly 90% of their patients seeking non-abortive care. I don’t know if it’s the same today, but in my day, they were the major non-school, community sex-Ed advocacy group.

Or that. That's a good reason for conservatives to hate it, too.

[–] BrotherL0v3@lemmy.world 18 points 1 month ago (2 children)

I have no idea why people think late-term, abortion-as-contraceptive abortions are a thing.

Have they never known a pregnant person? Seen all the gross and painful shit pregnancy puts someone through? Do they really think people are subjecting their bodies to that for six months... just because???

[–] pyre@lemmy.world 5 points 1 month ago

it's the party of incels. yes they think that people just carry a baby for nine months (because it's not like that's taxing or anything) and decide you know what, I changed my mind.

however, if I have a problem with MY pregnancy then it's an exception and it doesn't count. fuck you though. the only moral abortion is my abortion.

[–] billiam0202@lemmy.world 4 points 1 month ago

Nobody thinks it's a thing. The GOP uses it as a bullshit fearmongering tactic, and their voting base accepts it no-thinking-required.

[–] Drusas@fedia.io 58 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Wouldn't want low income people to get healthcare, after all. Just let them get STIs and spread them around and don't treat them. Don't give them access to birth control, so that they end up needing abortions later that they otherwise wouldn't have. Perfect system.

Fucking sociopaths.

[–] pivot_root@lemmy.world 4 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

Don't forget control, exploitation, and self-righteousness. It's a lot easier to dehumanize people when you can look at them as dirty, poor, God-straying vermin while you yourself are a beacon of good Christian values. Therefore, it's their own fault that they're miserable. They could be just like you, but they reject the Lord's light and are too lazy to pull themselves up by their bootstraps.

It really helps keep things running smoothly for fucking the layman and enriching the billionaires and corporations while everybody else looks the other way.

[–] magnetosphere@fedia.io 43 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Is this a surprise to anyone?

[–] DragonTypeWyvern@midwest.social 18 points 1 month ago

Never underestimate the "Centrist" capacity for ignorance.

[–] EmpatheticTeddyBear@lemmy.world 17 points 1 month ago (3 children)

Since when does the government pay Planned Parenthood?

[–] eerongal@ttrpg.network 18 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Since the 70s. It was in an act signed by Nixon.

[–] Cruxifux@feddit.nl 11 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Back before Jerry Falwell and Reagan decided that abortion was going to be a huge Christian Republican issue, few people gave a shit about it.

[–] Zier@fedia.io 8 points 1 month ago

Correct. Here is some history for anyone who is interested. Spoiler Alert: It was about racism & christians taking over. https://www.politico.com/magazine/story/2014/05/religious-right-real-origins-107133/

If only this were a hole. People vote Republican because they want this.

This headline is a lie.

... it will only be TRUMP'S second term. It will be Vance's FIRST.

Journalism is dead.

[–] grue@lemmy.world 7 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

Why is that, again?

Oh yeah: it's because Trump tried to have his first VP killed for not backing his coup attempt.

[–] mycodesucks@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Apparently having your VP killed is an official duty with the presumption of immunity.

Hope Vance is having fun.

[–] queermunist@lemmy.ml 2 points 1 month ago

tbh he's probably just rolling the dice on Trump not surviving another four years
