A few years ago, I released Watch to 5K, a standalone Apple Watch app designed to help people get into running by training towards a 5KM goal with just their Apple Watch. Since its initial release, I’ve worked on numerous updates, including the addition of an iPhone companion app for tracking overall progress and viewing completed runs, and a complete re-write in SwiftUI.
This year, my focus has been on expanding the app to meet the needs of those ready to push beyond the 5K mark. Earlier this week, I released version 6, which includes a new 5 to 10K Expansion plan.
Here’s what’s in the 10K plan:
- 8-Week Plan: This new plan is designed to help users transition from running 30 minutes to a full 10K over eight weeks.
- 3 Runs Per Week: The plan features a mix of base runs, long runs, and recovery runs spread over three days each week to build endurance and speed.
- Distance Goals: Introduces distance-based goals alongside the usual time-based ones, adding variety to the training.
- New Achievements: Unlock new achievements as users hit distance milestones.
- Voice Coach: Provides progress updates at every kilometre during distance runs. It’s a feature that has really helped me stay on track during my own runs!
- New 10K Icon: A small but fun update—there’s a new iPhone app icon to celebrate the progress to 10K!
A Quick Recap for Newcomers
For those who are not familiar with Watch to 5K, here’s a quick overview of what the app offers:
Key Features:
- Made for Apple Watch: Runs independently without the need for an iPhone. Watch face complications are included, allowing users to monitor their progress and quickly launch the app.
- iPhone Companion App: Track progress, view a breakdown of previous runs, including health data and run route. Achievements are awarded as users progress through the plan, celebrating milestones such as running continuously for 5 minutes or a certain distance.
- Integrates with Apple Health: Sessions are stored in Apple Health and count towards activity goals. Tracks route, distance, calories, average speed, and heart rate.
- Listen to Music While You Run: Works alongside preferred music or podcast apps, automatically ‘dipping’ the volume for instructions and updates. Signals the halfway point, so users know when to head home. Features an easy-to-follow countdown timer with sounds and haptics.
Pricing
The app is just £3.79 ($4.49), with no ongoing subscriptions (as they just don’t feel right for a beginner running plan). The 5 to 10K expansion can be unlocked for an additional £3.79.
Getting Featured by Apple!
A couple of weeks ago, I received an email from Apple stating that Watch to 5K might be featured in the App Store. This Thursday, the app began being highlighted on the main App Store tab in the UK & Ireland stores! Seeing an app I created featured alongside big names is an incredible feeling. It’s amazing that, as individuals, we can craft an app from start to finish and have the opportunity to reach millions of people.

I’d love to hear your thoughts, whether you’re new to the app or have been using it for a while. Happy running! 🏃♀️
