That's an impressively designed bit of kit.

Guess I have to go barter with the architecture department to use their 3d printer...

It's so cool I want to die 😩. I would never use it but it looks great.

Drop a SIM card in there and you’re not far off from a modern version of PDAs from back when pocket tech was interesting.

Not for calling of course. Text only (although everyone texts over the internet now - maybe for data as well).

Why not Calling? BT Headphone are quite good at calls

[–] ggtdbz@lemmy.dbzer0.com 7 points 3 months ago

I think I just like the retrofuturism of “giga pager”. Of course calling would work but it would be besides the point for me.

A modern phone could do everything this would be used for on a day-to-day.

BT headphones

Or a jack of some description, wires are always better for calls

I saw a wrist mounted thing the other day, and I was thinking a modern touchscreen version running Linux could legitimately be great with a good mount. This would be perfect for that. You only need a wrist mount that won't make your arm sweaty...

is it touchscreen? looks great

cool, is it compatible with different DEs?

Get out of here!

(Edit: Yes, of course. It's Linux.)

I kinda want one of these.

[–] ulterno@lemmy.kde.social 4 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Nice idea, using 2 batteries instead of one. Now to see if it can be hot-swappable

[–] wurstgulasch3000@lemmy.world 3 points 3 months ago

For the clockwork pi uConsole, which is a similar product and also uses two batteries, that seems to be the case

@kde@floss.social @soulscircuit @kde@lemmy.kde.social omg I can imagine that becoming a perfect DJing computer paired with Mixxx and a Pioneer controller

I was thinking this would be a otg deck for traveling. Adding ports galore (hdmi,dp etc) and being fully cast ready - you could dock it anywhere and take everything with you in a small form factor. Working in handheld mode on the plane, then casting/hooking to your hotel room tv with a BT keeb would be a dream. Given the customization inherent, this could blow Samsung Dex out of the water.

@kde@floss.social @soulscircuit @kde@lemmy.kde.social that keyboard, complete with the laser pointer button, looks very familiar! Nice job squeezing it into a new housing. The trackball too 👀

[–] jmtd@pleroma.debian.social 1 points 3 months ago

@kde @kde that keyboard module is screaming out for full width keeb with a trackpoint ;)

[–] sbank@hachyderm.io 1 points 3 months ago

@kde@floss.social @soulscircuit @kde@lemmy.kde.social I guess I will be buying Skyrim yet again… sigh.

I wonder if that keyboard is via a wired interface only. Because something like that would be perfect for a Pico W or ESP32 so that it works detatched. I think this would be great on a desk with a kickstand and the keyboard detatched. There might even be some pins leftover for a "wireless" GPIO header on the keyboard, which would be really cool if you were using the included VESA mount for the tablet

[–] JasonDJ@lemmy.zip 1 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago) (1 children)

That keyboard looks very similar to various "mini keyboards" on Amazon. I searched for "pc remote keyboard trackpad" and found a couple that are pretty close.

I have had a couple. Don't expect to type out a novel on it. Between the tiny layout, the straight rows, and the mushy matrix, they are barely good enough for searching for movie titles on Kodi. I'd rather use a phone touchscreen keyboard.

[–] princessnorah@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 3 months ago

I think it's pretty hard to make that sort of call from a single photograph, of pre-release hardware. You've used the literal cheapest common denominator of keyboards that look like this, something you could probably get on aliexpress for a dollar that's been rebranded. Besides that, I'm talking about using either one of two open microcontrollers that would make the device and it's firmware hackable, which is still much cooler than what you probably got from Amazon.

This thing pulls 2.3 amps under normal use? JFC do a little power optimization y'all

[–] Bro666@social.tchncs.de 13 points 3 months ago (1 children)

@SpaceNoodle @kde

It's early days and WiP. Give them a chance.

[–] LazaroFilm@lemmy.world 7 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Great idea! Wanna get on it?

[–] SpaceNoodle@lemmy.world -2 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago) (1 children)

Unfortunately, I'm out of spare time between my full-time job doing some of that, and my hobby projects doing even more of that.

I could probably spare a little time to give out some pointers and field some questions, though.

[–] LazaroFilm@lemmy.world 5 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Ok, now do you get the irony? Or you’re the only one with limited time?

Also, it’s just a prototype. You’re complaining about how bad the special effects are while reading the script of a movie.

[–] SpaceNoodle@lemmy.world -2 points 3 months ago (1 children)

You'll also notice I'm not hawking incomplete products.

If this is merely at the concept stage, as your metaphor would imply, why advertise the battery size and life as being so bad?

[–] LazaroFilm@lemmy.world 4 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Wow. You must be fun at parties.

[–] SpaceNoodle@lemmy.world 0 points 3 months ago

I am, thank you.
