"As reported by Eurogamer, 48-year-old Anthony Bray, of Nuneaton in Warwickshire, England, was spotted carrying a replica of the iconic weapon from Nintendo’s The Legend of Zelda series openly in the local town centre.

Warwickshire Police spotted Bray on June 8 via CCTV walking down the street with something in his hand. Bray was said to have approached officers with the item visible in his hand, at which point he was arrested as he was carrying a bladed article."

I've seen letter openers that are more threatening than that thing.

[–] KazuyaDarklight@lemmy.world 15 points 3 months ago

That IS a letter opener. I have one extremely similar but it's a sword from an anime.

[–] TheFunkyMonk@lemmy.world 7 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Now I want a Master Sword letter opener.

[–] Lost_My_Mind@lemmy.world 1 points 3 months ago

You gotta play the jingle everytime you pull the sword back out of the now opened letter.

[–] Pronell@lemmy.world 17 points 3 months ago (1 children)

This shit is not world fucking news.

[–] Fubarberry@sopuli.xyz 31 points 3 months ago (1 children)

It's news because of how extreme it is. 4 months in prison for having a novelty toy letter opener? Seems absolutely absurd.

[–] Pronell@lemmy.world 5 points 3 months ago (1 children)

You can make stupid outrage news anywhere, out of any number of issues. It does not escalate to world news.

[–] doingthestuff@lemmy.world 13 points 3 months ago

I disagree. When any government gets too heavy handed we should all pay attention and put them back in their place as public servants.

With a bit more self-awareness, Bray could have avoided contact with us completely.

He was arrested for being obtuse.

[–] WhatAmLemmy@lemmy.world 3 points 3 months ago (1 children)

He was imprisoned for being a potentially dangerous moron. If he had the thing in a bag he would not be imprisoned for it, if it were found after a truly random search.

[–] catloaf@lemm.ee 4 points 3 months ago

If we imprisoned every potentially dangerous moron, everyone would be in prison.

It's contextual. If someone is constantly getting hit with charges there is an issue. Either the person or the cops. I'm guessing it's the person if he keeps getting convicted. I'm not looking into every detail of each case he has.

[–] FelixCress@lemmy.world 5 points 3 months ago (2 children)

Are you saying that because he has a conviction for a burglary, he shouldn't be trusted with a letter opener?

Let's hope the fuckers never caught dining at the outside seating of a steakhouse.

[–] GladiusB@lemmy.world 0 points 3 months ago

No. I'm saying many convictions usually means the person is at fault. How many car accidents does a person need to be in until you judge them as a bad driver?

England

Well there's your problem.

[–] dual_sport_dork@lemmy.world 12 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Yes. I am proud (?) to say that in my US state I could legally carry a full size functional Master Sword, or any other sword, on my belt or strapped to my back provided I didn't brandish it at anyone without due cause.

It would technically be illegal to conceal without a permit, though, which raises some interesting logistical questions.

[–] Lemmeenym@lemm.ee 4 points 3 months ago (2 children)

I've seen Highlander, you can conceal a full size katana in the inside breast pocket of a trench coat. You can even go for a run with it there and the coat will flap and move like the sword isn't even there.

[–] lemonmelon@lemmy.world 8 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Yes, but you must:

  1. Be immortal
  2. Have inside you blood of kings
  3. Have no rival (no man can be your equal)

Sure, but Who Wants to Live Forever? There's no chance for us, it's all decided for us. This world has only one sweet moment set aside for us.

I'm also going to drop this link here...

...And then run away going "Woo-hoo, woo-hoo!" like Daffy Duck. You're welcome.

[–] owenfromcanada@lemmy.world 1 points 3 months ago

D'j'a 'ave a permit for that? What about the permit license?

[–] GissaMittJobb@lemmy.ml 1 points 3 months ago

Oí! You got a license for that sword?
