Seems like someone deleted this after it got posted, so let’s call out this piece of shit. Apologies if repost.

“I think it is you, the women, who have had the most diabolic lies told to you. Some of you may go on to lead successful careers in the world but I would venture to guess that the majority of you are most excited about your marriage and the children you will bring into this world…”

The worst part is that he was saying this to a bunch of women who just graduated with degrees. He’s basically telling them all to give up after putting in 4+ years of work. This guy is a total shit bag.

[–] RaoulDook@lemmy.world 33 points 6 months ago (2 children)

It's a football meathead speaking his dumb meathead thoughts, just garbage to toss out basically. Sad that his dumb thoughts were published though. Outrage journalism has lowered the bar for society pretty significantly.

[–] Clent@lemmy.world 37 points 6 months ago (1 children)

Blaming journalism for reporting what this guy said at a graduation ceremony is fucking hilarious and tone deaf.

"If people wanted you to write warmly about them , they should've behaved better"

Being a meathead isn't an excuse; behave better. That includes people who make excuses for people who behave poorly.

"If it were not for football, I would not be playing football today..." - H. Butker

[–] some_guy@lemmy.sdf.org 18 points 6 months ago (1 children)

And accruing financial debt. But you can make that go away by baking cookies for your family and preparing a nice dinner for your husband.

This guy grew up around me. Truly a bible thumping idiot. And a catholic to boot. How they can honestly believe they have a moral leg to stand on while supporting that church is ironic to the peak. Get fucked Butker

[–] xtr0n@sh.itjust.works 24 points 6 months ago (3 children)

I’m so confused by the super fundie catholics. I grew up in New England and was raised Catholic, even went to Catholic school for a bit, and never got any of that “barefoot and pregnant” in teachings or sermons. The church always had awful stances on abortion, birth control, divorce and homosexuality but pretty much everyone just glossed over or ignored it. And there really wasn’t anyone pushing that shit. Like you never heard anti gay or any abortion stuff in church or in school. I wonder if the church adapts to the local region? Like how McDonalds sells wine in France? Or maybe the American dioceses all got infiltrated by super right wing priests?

[–] slurpinderpin@lemmy.world 11 points 6 months ago (1 children)

It might be regional. Seems like the catholics in the south ignore the whole child rape thing too. I have family who married into that religion unfortunately and their spouse was actually surprised when I brought it up, like he’d never heard about it before I mentioned it

Adide from the WTF factor, imagine being the most easily replaceable member of the team and saying literally anything divisive at all. Like bruh you ain't the QB, you can be gone end of the season and thats it, no one gonna look twice at you. You're a step above the guy in the mascot suit.

[–] dogslayeggs@lemmy.world 39 points 6 months ago (7 children)

NFL kicker has to be a really weirdly rough job. You don't really do much work during the game and have far less risk of violent physical contact, but you have to practice your ass off outside the game because the kicking game has little margin for error. Your role is absolutely critical and can easily decide the outcome of almost every game, but nobody respects you and almost nobody knows your name unless you fuck up real bad. I used to be a huge NFL nerd but can only name three kickers: Pat McAfee because he's a TV personality now, Sebastion Janikowski because of his name and how rotund he was, and Ray Finkle who isn't even a real person just a movie kicker. I can't even remember the name of the Hall of Fame kicker for the Pats and Colts who won many Super Bowls.

And yeah, nobody will give a shit if this shitstain goes away. Will the NFL, well-known for their respect for human rights and progressive views, actually do anything about it, though?

[–] FigMcLargeHuge@sh.itjust.works 15 points 6 months ago

Goddamnit, I almost blew water out of my nose when I got to Ray Finkle.

[–] son_named_bort@lemmy.world 8 points 6 months ago

Pat McAfee was a punter, but yeah a kicker is like being a ref: if you know their name it usually means they did bad.

Hey. The guy in the mascot suit actually works for his check. This fuckstick is lower on the roster than the towel boy, and seems even less intelligent than the orange water cooler.

[–] BigBananaDealer@lemm.ee 7 points 6 months ago (2 children)

no reason to put down kickers because of butker. its probably the most mentally tough job in the league

blair walsh went from all star record breaking kicker to not even in the league anymore all because of 1 single missed kick

Oh, your god said we should do that? But my god is a super god times infinity and he says the opposite.

Just goes to show you that for every kid that is mature for their age, there's 100s of adults that never left the playground.

[–] Hobbes_Dent@lemmy.world 42 points 6 months ago (4 children)

Continuing from OP…

“I can tell you that my beautiful wife Isabelle would be the first to say her life truly started when she started living her vocation as a wife and as a mother. I’m on this stage today, able to be the man that I am, because I have a wife who leans into her vocation.

“I’m beyond blessed with the many talents God has given me, but it cannot be overstated that all my success is made possible because a girl I met in band class back in middle school would convert to the faith, become my wife, and embrace one of the most important titles of all. Homemaker.”

[–] frickineh@lemmy.world 60 points 6 months ago

The many talents god gave him apparently don't include shoving his unsolicited opinions right up his Butker, unfortunately.

[–] Montagge@lemmy.zip 27 points 6 months ago

The cherry on the shit cake is he was blubbering during this part. Definitely a stable individual.

Our obsession with what celebrities think can really cause problems. There's really no reason to care what a guy like Butker thinks about social issues, other than maybe to feel sorry for his wife.

[–] ininewcrow@lemmy.ca 8 points 6 months ago (1 children)

Millionaires and billionaires ..... our modern day logic is to think and believe that someone who owns or has access to enormous sums of money automatically gives them the title of "genius".

I suppose humanity has always been like that.

We called them Kings, Queens, Lords, Emperors in the past ...... we changed the titles but the blind praise is still the same.

Lol. Is he the best that college could find to give a commencement speech? Says more about the college than this brain dead dingus.

[–] n2burns@lemmy.ca 43 points 6 months ago* (last edited 6 months ago) (1 children)

FTA:

Butker recently delivered the commencement address at Benedictine College, a liberal arts institution in Atchison, Kansas. This is the same college that once forced out gay basketball player Jallen Messersmith to remove a rainbow flag from his dorm room window.

It would seem that Butker felt right at home.

So unfortunately, it seems like this might be what the college was going for.

[–] Dasus@lemmy.world 9 points 6 months ago* (last edited 6 months ago) (2 children)

Oh shit. Only thing I have to say is:

>Liberal arts institution

>"take that rainbow down"

Pick one

[–] BakerBagel@midwest.social 22 points 6 months ago

Thats not what liberal arts means... Liberal arts colleges require classes across multiple disciplines across the humanites and sciences, beleiveing a rounded education is beneficial to a hyper specific one.

[–] n2burns@lemmy.ca 10 points 6 months ago (1 children)

I would say the pick one is more of "Liberal arts institution" and "rural Kansas".

Butker, a conservative Catholic himself, dismissed Pride month as consisting of the “deadly sin sort of pride” while denouncing abortion and President Joe Biden’s handling of the pandemic. He said women are told “diabolical lies” about career ambition when “one of the most important titles of all” is that of homemaker. He said this is not time for “the church of nice” and in particular blasted Catholics who support abortion rights and “dangerous gender ideologies.”

What a tool. But the school says:

The society seeks to differentiate schools that “refuse to compromise their Catholic mission” from those that have become “battlegrounds for today’s culture wars.”

Yet they invite this tool to speak and be part of those same culture wars.

https://apnews.com/article/catholic-college-conservative-commencement-harrison-butker-a40b881fe41ac489853fb67e58ed20d1

Just in case you think it's one right-wingnut school turning out students who attend because it suits their narrative:

Benedictine College’s Transforming Culture in America plan makes professional advancement for students a high priority, saying “Transforming Culture in America will require leaders in the workplace and public life who inspire others to be committed to living the Gospel.”

The “BC in D.C.” program was started specifically to help Benedictine College students gain experience in positions of power in our nation’s capital in order to further the Center for Constitutional Liberty’s mission to inspire, inform, and direct the next generation of America’s leaders.

https://media.benedictine.edu/bc-in-d-c-is-bringing-benedictine-values-to-capitol-hill

So there you have it, a religious school intent on inserting religious like-minded individuals into politics and influencing politics in the direction of individuals like Butker.

[–] Sybilvane@lemmy.ca 28 points 6 months ago (1 children)

Aren't the majority of people in general more excited about family and relationships than about their careers? Most jobs nowadays aren't exactly inspiring.

[–] ZILtoid1991@lemmy.world 8 points 6 months ago (1 children)

Also you need the career unless you want your kids in absolute povety, which can lead them down some really dark places.

Elite projection is strong with this one. He thinks anyone can just afford to have kids and careers are something people have as a fun thing.

[–] Peddlephile@lemm.ee 17 points 6 months ago (4 children)

Hahaha. Even if there WERE lots of women who wanted to be homemakers, there is no way that a family can run on the average single income. So, somebody has been telling diabolical lies to him about the current economy.

"the tyranny of diversity, equity and inclusion"

Dude could have just said DEI. But spelling it out really shows how stupid it is.

Howard Stern was bashing him pretty good this morning on his radio show. Good kicker but religious nutjob.
