AUSTIN, Texas – Leaked video shows Hood County Constable Scott London, Hood County GOP Chair Steve Biggers and Hood County GOP Chair candidate Greg Harrell attending a meeting held by Abolish Abortion Texas (AATX) where they supported the death penalty for women who seek abortions or use IVF, including pregnant minors. London and Harrel have also signed onto a pledge from the same group vowing to abolish all circumstances of abortion care in Texas.

Surprised it's a leaked video, and not a campaign ad

[–] oDDmON@lemmy.world 34 points 7 months ago

Don’t give them any ideas, the tube’s gotten toxic enough lately.

[–] carl_dungeon@lemmy.world 81 points 7 months ago (2 children)

By this logic, all the republicans that have caused the premature death of people by not providing healthcare, homeless services, meals for children, living wages, and cause people to be caught in vicious cycles of poverty and drug abuse should also be put to death. Line them up!

[–] iheartneopets@lemm.ee 8 points 7 months ago

It's not logic, and trying to argue with them will never work. It's disdain for and a desire to control women, period. Conservatism is about hierarchy, and people having their proper place in it. These laws and outlooks are about trying to keep women in their place in the hierarchy. The same can be said about laws against LGBTQ people.

They want the death penalty? I can't with these people, I thought the whole point of banning abortion was that "every life is sacred".

Do they ever get tired of being so hypocritical?

[–] stoly@lemmy.world 57 points 7 months ago (2 children)

No, this has always been about control. They get to decide who lives and who dies, not women, which is why the pro-life types are always also pro death penalty.

[–] mojo_raisin@lemmy.world 12 points 7 months ago

It's always about power.

[–] rambling_lunatic@sh.itjust.works 5 points 7 months ago* (last edited 7 months ago)

In my country they're anti-death-penalty, courtesy of Catholicism. I hate how they made ectopic pregnancies into death sentences but props to them for consistency I guess.

[–] CosmicTurtle@lemmy.world 43 points 7 months ago (4 children)

The whole point was to punish sexually promiscuous women.

Every life is sacred is just the spin.

Every unborn life is sacred. Every actual born human can go fuck themselves.

[–] dual_sport_dork@lemmy.world 19 points 7 months ago (1 children)

punish sexually promiscuous women.

So then where does all this whinging about IVF enter into it? How dare you get pregnant by... not... having... sex?

I realize my problem here is that I'm attempting to apply logic where none actually exists. But come on.

[–] axsyse@lemmy.sdf.org 17 points 7 months ago

Not to mention: that's punishing people who are specifically, deliberately TRYING to become parents. They're probably among the LEAST likely to get abortions.

There isn't any logic. The cruelty is the point.

[–] PeepinGoodArgs@reddthat.com 12 points 7 months ago (1 children)

The unborn are innocent, after which they're tainted with original sin. It makes sense in the dumbest way possible.

[–] stoly@lemmy.world 11 points 7 months ago (1 children)

This is really a Catholic interpretation and those in TX are certainly in the Evangelical camp. They don't really think in terms of original sin.

[–] Maggoty@lemmy.world 6 points 7 months ago* (last edited 7 months ago) (1 children)

They do, but they also think that loudly affirming your love for Jesus and then living according to their rules solves it. So it doesn't come up until you refuse them.

Catholics think living a generally good life is enough and that there's forgiveness for most things as long as you remain active in the church, go to confession, and do your penance.

[–] stoly@lemmy.world 10 points 7 months ago

In my experience, there's generally little difference between an Evangelical and a Sovereign Citizen. They both speak certain magic words that means they don't have to face any consequences; they believe that they have all of the rights of doing so but none of the responsibilities.

[–] dirthawker0@lemmy.world 8 points 7 months ago

Not even promiscuous, really. Any woman who wants to have sex and also wants to avoid pregnancy is on their shit list. Doesn't matter if she's with one person for 20 years. Could even be married. Get an abortion, go to jail, oh wait no, the friggin electric chair.

[–] KairuByte@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 7 months ago

The unborn” are a convenient group of people to advocate for. They never make demands of you; they are morally uncomplicated, unlike the incarcerated, addicted, or the chronically poor; they don’t resent your condescension or complain that you are not politically correct; unlike widows, they don’t ask you to question patriarchy; unlike orphans, they don’t need money, education, or childcare; unlike aliens, they don’t bring all that racial, cultural, and religious baggage that you dislike; they allow you to feel good about yourself without any work at creating or maintaining relationships; and when they are born, you can forget about them, because they cease to be unborn. You can love the unborn and advocate for them without substantially challenging your own wealth, power, or privilege, without re-imagining social structures, apologizing, or making reparations to anyone. They are, in short, the perfect people to love if you want to claim you love Jesus, but actually dislike people who breathe. Prisoners? Immigrants? The sick? The poor? Widows? Orphans? All the groups that are specifically mentioned in the Bible? They all get thrown under the bus for the unborn.

I don't know why this is news to anyone. Do we not teach history any more? They go for the heaviest available sentences and then sit in judgement of women depending on their social and political status. But they'll pretend it's based on some objective standard. So rich conservative women get the "poor girl had a miscarriage" treatment and poor minorities get the heaviest penalty possible for maliciously killing babies.

This is not new, this is not the first time religious conservatives have done this.

[–] kubica@kbin.social 56 points 7 months ago

Envious of the the talibans and the stonings?...

[–] stoly@lemmy.world 54 points 7 months ago (1 children)

They are taking on IVF. Next they will start to say that people who had C-sections are not really mothers and their children were not actually born. (note: this is a real thing)

[–] dual_sport_dork@lemmy.world 35 points 7 months ago (2 children)

Fine; Children born via c-section were not actually born. That means they don't have to pay taxes. Checkmate!

[–] stoly@lemmy.world 9 points 7 months ago

lol nice one

[–] WhiskyTangoFoxtrot@lemmy.world 8 points 7 months ago

Also means they can kill Macbeth.

[–] LovingHippieCat@lemmy.world 49 points 7 months ago

This is the same kinda thing that happened recently with Ohio and Michigan republicans where they were discussing how they intend to ban all gender affirming care for literally everyone. It's almost like the Republicans are bigots and monsters who want to enact their bigotry and awfulness on the country.

[–] maculata@aussie.zone 38 points 7 months ago

Ah yes. Christian love.

[–] CileTheSane@lemmy.ca 38 points 7 months ago

where they supported the death penalty for women who seek abortions

When you're so pro-life you loop around and become pro-killing.

[–] Birdie@thelemmy.club 32 points 7 months ago (1 children)

Not much different from the Taliban over in Afghanistan. All the religious idiots wanting to kill women, even young girls.

[–] dQw4w9WgXcQ@lemm.ee 10 points 7 months ago (1 children)

Both are also following an old set of laws, completely unwilling to change anything even as society changes.

[–] No_Eponym@lemmy.ca 6 points 7 months ago

Y'All Qaeda, everyone.

[–] DevCat@lemmy.world 24 points 7 months ago

This will have no effect in an election year. /s

[–] Stovetop@lemmy.world 24 points 7 months ago

Republicans meet with Republicans. What else is new?

[–] peopleproblems@lemmy.world 20 points 7 months ago (2 children)

I'm starting to wonder if all this insane shit about punishing women over reproductive health care is an attempt to make domestic abuse acceptable.

Like I get it, not having control over someone you have shaky trust in doesn't feel good, but maybe it's not about control and it's about that lack of trust.

[–] some_guy@lemmy.sdf.org 13 points 7 months ago

Given that they’re trying to do away with no-fault divorce and one-party divorce, your theory is the natural outcome they seek.

[–] Maggoty@lemmy.world 7 points 7 months ago

Oh no that's the entire trad movement and every time they say the man is the head of the household.

[–] Burn_The_Right@lemmy.world 19 points 7 months ago* (last edited 7 months ago) (1 children)

Conservatism should be illegal. Nothing good in the history of mankind has ever come from it. The only things to come from conservatism are oppression, bigotry and death.

“Attended” meetings? Texasdemocrats, they are the meetings. Why are you, of all voices, giving them an out?
