I never liked the invincible bridge gates, it's really really cool to see this update and get some real combat besides the clowns.

I haven't played much since the big steam release, is dwarf therapist still defacto required? Any tips on getting back into it?

I've played many years ago, and I've started again in the last weeks with the Steam version. I'd say Dwarf Therapist isn't required anymore to organize a fortress reasonably enough. The new work details are nice. DFHack is still very much relevant, and fortunately extremely easy to install with Steam. It offers various fixes, extra automation for stuff like butchery and a handful of advanced UIs where the game falls short.
