Windows 10 supported ended October 13th. I was eagerly awaiting this Steam Hardware Survey anticipating 20% Linux market share but bracing myself for just 10% (half-ironically). Turns out it doesn't matter how much greener the grass is on this side.
Though 31% are still on Windows 10 so there's still room to grow. I don't think the Windows 11 people are ever going to be converted short of some catastrophically poor management at Microsoft. I saw someone say elsewhere that 5-10% would make Linux too big to ignore so if we can get to those levels before everyone switches to Windows 11 then we could be actually (god forbid) relevant.
You'll still only get a very small subset of people willing to even attempt to switch over to Linux in those events.
It isn't even about disliking change or 'using what you're used to' at this point, since Windows is drastically changing all the time (for the worse) but most people just get used to it as the "new normal" and we're the weird ones for trying to actually take control of the situation, and look for better alternatives.
To most people the OS is the computer. If Microsoft was extremely mismanaged, they'd probably buy a new Windows 11 computer first. After failing that they'd need someone they know to boot them into Linux with a live-boot USB.
I think the level of mismanagement required for that to happen is probably unrealistic. It'd need to be on the level that people would switch back to Windows 10 en-mass and Microsoft would definitely notice that.
Keep in mind that you can stay on Win10 unprotected, or even get a 1-year extension of security updates for free if you link your account. So it's possible that we won't see a big jump until next year.
That's true, though it's only the Europeans that got free security updates.
I'm Latin American and I got security updates on my notebook. 🤷🏻♂️
Weird. I only know of Europeans getting free extended security updates.
