I wonder if Taiibi was deeply a contrarian his whole life plus he had a huge urge to be asshole. But he kept most of that in check. And then something (simple greed?) triggered him and he realized that pissing off liberals and the left was child's play so he lurched to the right. Whatever happened - it's very strange that he went from being an excellent muckraking journo to being a troll and a ready-to-use tool for the rightwing - including Elon of all people.

Some of the reporters he used to work with are speculating he might have been made an offer he couldn't refuse. Not saying it's blackmail but yeah it might be blackmail

For Occam's razor - blackmail is a perfect fit. I had a super-quickie look at his Twitter account and his most recent activity was pro-Kirk posts.

Especially considering all of the books he wrote, how he was critical of isn't real 20+ years ago. It just doesn't seem coherent for someone that smart and dare I say principled to make such a drastic shift to the dark side. But then again there's Russell Brand so I dunno
