This is one of my favorite anime of all time. I haven't really been able to find anything that can capture the same feeling. There are two that I have found to be the closest.

  1. Kino's Journey - another anthology series following the titular Kino as they ride from country to country in some kind of eerie version of our world that has devolved into a collection of city-states rather than nations. There are two adaptations, adapting a different subset of the novels. I suggest the second one for new watchers and then the first if you want more.
  2. Natsume's Book of Friends - follows a boy, Natsume, that can see yokai that others can't. He inherits some stuff from his grandmother and learns that she could interact with yokai as well. He goes around doing yokai of the week things to learn more about her. Overall, this one is a lot warmer and feel-good of a show.
