Yeah that shot was masterful... conspiracy or not, this was a trained sniper.

Nooot really? I mean I'm not gonna lie I haven't really looked into the exact shooting here but 200 yards isn't really that crazy of a shot. If you assume the shooter was aiming for the neck it becomes a bit of a crazy shot, but I bet they were aiming for the head or body.

I'm sure many people who regularly go hunting could land a 200 yard shot. Heck I bet if you gave someone a few weeks of practice in a range they could consistently land 200 yard shots.

I say this from a place where I actually have fired guns before, including things like Ar-15s and an assortment of hunting rifles. They're just too easy to use.

Not sure it was just the fact they made the shot. They also got away.

[–] Nora@lemmy.dbzer0.com 13 points 2 days ago (1 children)

For now sure. I doubt the killer will get away with it forever, and even if he does, I won't be shocked if someday we found out that it was just a hunter, who escaped into the local desert/woods/mountains whatever is near that town.

I have little faith in cops in general to do the right job, and with the amount of confusion, "We got him!" "No we didn't!" "We got him!" "Also not this guy!" on the scene it's not astounding that the shooter wasn't caught immediately, at least to me anyway.

Make no mistake someone is going down for this. I get the sense they have no idea who it was so they are just gonna pick someone up after awhile.

[–] Nora@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 2 days ago

Yeah, this wouldn't surprise me.

I'd probably aim for the neck to be honest. Gives room above and below for error.

Could have been former military? They used a single shot and then eloped with no trace. Very clean and professional.

200 yards is anything but masterful, with even a low-end scope its an easy shot if you've spent more than a day or two practicing at a range. The armys qualifying target is a human silhouette set at 300 yards and they are using open iron sights with no magnification or aid whatsoever.

[–] too_high_for_this@lemmy.world 5 points 2 days ago

I'm a hunter. I shoot my guns maybe 3-4 times a year (couple days at the range and a couple actually hunting). Like, less than 100 rounds/year between four guns. So I'm not a great marksman, and definitely not a "trained sniper".

This would be an easy shot for me. At 150 yards, I can shoot a 1/2" grouping, and I have a low-end rifle and scope. You don't have to account for bullet drop or wind at that distance. Just aim and shoot.

Could have been luck. I agree with you, but I'm just saying that it also could have been luck.
