But... but... then you'd have to think about what you're doing and *gasp* develop a basic understanding of the technology that runs your life! Who has time for that nerd shit?

    [–] thatonecoder@lemmy.ca 44 points 1 day ago (2 children)

To be fair, some people are burnt out to degrees most of humanity struggles to comprehend. Of course, there are always the lazy butts; HOWEVER, you cannot generalize at all.

    [–] Catoblepas@piefed.blahaj.zone 25 points 1 day ago

Nah man, those stupid ass single parents working multiple jobs need to get their priorities straight! /s

    [–] Diplomjodler3@lemmy.world 13 points 1 day ago (1 children)

So basically, if you're sawing trees with a blunt saw and somebody suggests sharpening the saw, you'll say "I can't, I got trees to cut!"?

    [–] Sc00ter@lemmy.zip 19 points 1 day ago (3 children)

    Almost.

Imagine youre cutting trees with an axe and someone tells you theres a tool out there that can do it better, but you have to learn how to use it to become efficient with it. And you dont have time to learn new tool because capitalism says you have to have that tree cut down right now.

    [–] BCsven@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

That may have been true for Linux 10 years ago, but now it is easier to install than Windows, and much faster to install. It may mean the axe handle is a different colour, but it chops the same or better.

    [–] Sc00ter@lemmy.zip 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

    faster and easier to install

Youre assuming youre talking to someone who installs their OS and doesnt open a box with an OS already installed

    [–] BCsven@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 day ago

I mean Dell, Lenovo, HP, system76, etc sell laptops with Ubuntu or Pop!_OS installed

    [–] Diplomjodler3@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

There is never a good time to change things. You just have to start somewhere. And I'm not saying everybody should do it right now. But the more people do it the quicker we build critical mass.

    [–] DasAlbatross@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

No no, you don't understand. Because this person wants to learn about linux everyone should want to. Because if they want to it's the best. If you just want to use things that are easy and spend your free time on things you enjoy you're an IDIOT! Wake up, sheeple!

    [–] mitch@piefed.mitch.science -1 points 21 hours ago

Who the fuck needs to "learn" Linux? it's an operating system. You just push the damn buttons.

    [–] QuoVadisHomines@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Not everyone has that aptitude. It isn’t always a matter of motivation.

    [–] SaharaMaleikuhm@feddit.org 1 points 1 day ago

I do it out of pure spite. Next step: replacing Android with PostmarketOS.

    [–] DasAlbatross@lemmy.world -4 points 1 day ago (2 children)

I'm assuming from this smug nonsense that you'd be able to fix your car if anything went wrong, right? What about if something structurally went wrong in your home? If you don't understand how an MRI machine works you better not get medical care!

What an absolutely brain dead take on what people should and shouldn't be doing with their time.

    [–] SpookyBogMonster@lemmy.ml 10 points 1 day ago (1 children)

All of those things, save for the MRI, are valuable life skills.

I don't need to know everything about an engine, but I have basic competency in changing my oil or replacing my air filter.

I don't know everything about the structure of my home, but I know enough to install some shelves or blinds.

If a problem is outside of my knowledge or ability? I call someone who can fix it for me.

A computer should be the same way. People should have a base level of competency in technology, and that technology should lend itself to people fixing problems themselves.

Everything being a proprietary, closed source, magic mystery box, that spies on you, and can only be fixed by the company that made it, is very bad, actually.

What an absolutely brain dead take on what people should and shouldn't be doing with their time.

Farmers have to waste time hacking their John Deere tractors, just to be able to start fixing them. OP isn't the one dictating what people should or shouldn't do with their time.

Great! So just like someone who knows how to install and remove software and update their system. The kind of thing they can do with Windows.

I work in IT and switched to Linux a few months ago because of Microsoft's latest moves. People saying that it's ready for every day use are out of their minds. I had nothing but problems with Manjaro, but I'm having a better experience on Kubuntu LTS. Now both of my monitors turn on every time! But sure, an every day person should contribute to the nouveau drivers to make Linux work with their specific monitor setup. A monitor setup that just works with Windows.

You're absolutely right about closed systems spying on you. That should be illegal. But to expect everyone to run Linux as it is today is patently ridiculous. I decided not to move my wife's laptop to Windows because I knew there'd be problems constantly that I didn't want to deal with.

I guess it would be better if Farmers were reading man pages to figure out why they bricked their system when trying to install new graphics drivers. Or figure out why they no longer can get to a desktop after installing graphics drivers only to find out that the compilation of the drivers failed completely silently which put their system into a state where they had to boot from a usb drive and rebuild their system.

Well there's your issue. You work in IT and picked a distro for someone with your knowledge. Car guys cause themselves hours of work all the time. Someone who just wants a computer to work can generally pick something like Linux mint and be good to go, with pre-installed applications that cover the major uses. You'll have to learn where things are, but it's relatively similar to windows. The issue would be if they happen to search online for how to do something that they haven't found in the UI yet, often they'll find terminal commands instead.

I'm not one saying that EVERYONE needs to use Linux, I just got a new pc, and I'm giving my old one to someone, and i ran the windows 11 iso through microwin and installed that for them. But when someone hits an issue and starts considering other options, there are simpler ones out there. Like when BMW tried to charge a subscription for heated seats. We don't need to learn to put together the whole car (arch), we can just get a Honda.

    [–] DasAlbatross@lemmy.world 0 points 1 day ago (1 children)

You might not be saying that but I'll quote the smug OP who said:

But… but… then you’d have to think about what you’re doing and gasp develop a basic understanding of the technology that runs your life! Who has time for that nerd shit?

This attitude will keep people away from Linux way longer than will make sense as it grows.

    [–] Bongles@lemmy.zip 4 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

That's fair and there's a huge range of opinions from people who currently use Linux regarding moving people to Linux. I see comments when I watch YouTube videos around Linux from people who literally don't want people to come to Linux unless you're full in to the open source belief, fully in to learning the terminal and os, and all those -insult- people who just want it to work can stay in windows and Mac.

There are absolutely others who considered Linux, see a comment like that, and abandon the idea because "fuck those guys".

    [–] Diplomjodler3@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Just because you had a bad experiences doesn't mean everyone will have. And Manjaro is about the dumbest distro to choose if you want a smooth experience. None of the things you describe are typical experiences. And of course Windows never has technical problems.

    [–] DasAlbatross@lemmy.world -2 points 1 day ago

Here's something that never happened with Windows: Wifi becoming completely disabled because I installed proprietary graphics drivers while installing Kubuntu. Happened twice before I realized I couldn't do that during the install. Worked fine after that. Well, not totally fine. The desktop session would freeze up every time so I had to ctrl+alt+f3 to get a terminal session so I could command line update the system. After that I was finally able to get to a desktop and start using my system. Totally ready for every day users. I can't remember the last time I had Windows crash on me. On Manjaro I had my desktop session lock up or just a full system crash at least once a day. And holy cow, I haven't had to reboot that many times to install updates since the early 00s.

My experience is typical based on my interactions with people trying out Linux and giving up. And then getting snide comments from Linux cultists online. It's a small wonder that more people don't use Linux!

    [–] Diplomjodler3@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

If you don’t understand how an MRI machine works you better not get medical care!

Accusing other people of dumb takes and spewing out a zinger like this does not require any more comment.

    [–] DasAlbatross@lemmy.world -2 points 1 day ago

I notice you're not saying anything about the car or the house. Don't know much do you? You just let other people do it because otherwise you’d have to think about what you’re doing and gasp develop a basic understanding of the technology that runs your life!
