Community rules (click to expand)

1. Follow the site-wide rules

2. Be civil
  • Understand the difference between a joke and an insult.
  • Do not harrass or attack users for any reason. This includes using blanket terms, like "every user of thing".
  • Don't get baited into back-and-forth insults. We are not animals.
  • Leave remarks of "peasantry" to the PCMR community. If you dislike an OS/service/application, attack the thing you dislike, not the individuals who use it. Some people may not have a choice.
  • Bigotry will not be tolerated.
  • 3. Post Linux-related content
  • Including Unix and BSD.
  • Non-Linux content is acceptable as long as it makes a reference to Linux. For example, the poorly made mockery of sudo in Windows.
  • No porn, no politics, no trolling or ragebaiting.
  • 4. No recent reposts
  • Everybody uses Arch btw, can't quit Vim, <loves/tolerates/hates> systemd, and wants to interject for a moment. You can stop now.

I'm the only computer user in my house. My son is starting to show interest, but only because of Minecraft, which also runs on Linux.

My son was convinced to use Linux by wobbly windows.

Although he does have a second SSD now with Windows to be able to play the big popular multiplayer game of the day with his friends. But they are back on Minecraft often enough.

Just tossing this out there, if your son hasn't seen it yet, show him Portal. I showed it to my son when he was starting to get into computers and its still one of his favorites in college.

Show him The Stanley Parable. Prepare him for his future

    [–] ITGuyLevi@programming.dev 4 points 3 days ago

Haha, yes, he has played that one quite a bit!

I don't know if this still holds but, my experience is that minecraft works arguably better on linux

    [–] Tlaloc_Temporal@lemmy.ca 2 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Strangely enough, Bedrock is har to use on Linux. Java is so much better though.

    [–] festnt@sh.itjust.works 1 points 3 days ago

honestly, bedrock is just a cash grab game so i don't even care about not having it in linux. and if i really wanna play with people who don't have PCs, i can install one mod on the server and they can join and play perfectly

Switch over to Luanti instead of MinecraftπŸ˜‰

You can show him the wonders of 3rd party FOSS linux minecraft launchers like polymc.

You can also be a good parent and not introduce him to a modded gaming addiction.

This is like the trolley prolem all over again.

Prism launcher! Has a cat button too

    [–] festnt@sh.itjust.works 1 points 3 days ago

cat button has been there since multimc, but prism has some different cats! (and the possibility to get cat packs, maning you can put whatever you want there!)

    [–] festnt@sh.itjust.works 1 points 3 days ago

the owner/lead dev/github project creator of polymc kinda went crazy a while ago and put some malware or something on the launcher so most of the dev team got an older, unadulterated version of the launcher and created prismlauncher, which is up until now, the best launcher i've used. also, if you have flatpak it's really easy to find and install.

and ehhh performance mods are basically necessary to run minecraft smoothly, so i'd really recommend the simply optimized modpack, which is the same as vanilla but has the best optimization mods (or the fabulously optimized modpack, which is basically the same thing but has some quality of life mods thrown in too)

Yeah, my wife does everything on her phone.

    oof.

(I say, as though I don't use my phone 4x more than my laptop, which is honestly a bad habit I need to break because programming on phone suuucks.)
