Fair question! I also pack a pistol, that's my #1 defense, if it comes to that.
Mainly just for giggles and popping cans. I wanted a rifle I could break in half that weighs nothing, stows in my backpack until I get rolling. Don't often see people on the trail, but still don't want to freak anyone out.
You get out in the real wilds, you're on your own, no 911. Having seen the shit I have on the trail, I'd like some defense, at least a noise maker. Ever seen a hulking, healthy, male, mountain lion? A black bear mamma trailing two cubs? LOL, one time just having a visible pistol kept a redneck hunter from beating my ass. :)
