Funnily enough he's actually describing a process inherent in capitalism - the creation of new markets and new demands and new needs. No one needed electricity until it was available, and then suddenly everyone needed it.

Electricity has irreplaceable uses though. Some things are virtually useless, like teeth-whitening, but (among other factors) capitalists use advertising to make it so what is otherwise looking normal is now sub-standard.
