Streaming video games from the cloud, maybe. It might have been long enough for that to get back into the hype cycle.

I don't know though, cryptocurrency promised to fix neoliberalism by providing new imaginary markets to expand into forever, and AI promised to build God. I don't think the potential for a probably-Netflix-sized business can hold up that kind of hype.

you have to live super close to the datacenter for streaming realtime games to not suck all of the ass. i guess that makes it a place to shunt capital but idk if the investor case is there, probably need something besides gaming that it enables to get the big bucks.

I wonder if fiber optics will change that

depends what you're upgrading from, and what you're playing. i get 80ms rtt with one of my soul calibur friends and i can definitely tell the difference between that, offline, or another 40ms to a different person further away and i'd hate to play any kind of action game or shooter with that kind of delay.

I think you're on to something with cloud streaming. A big company I worked for had been investing in it for a while and they might do something eventually.
