While it is true that Blurays have modern resolution. I don't believe that it has been widely adopted. People still buy DVDs more than Blurays. There is still a lot of people who only watch DVDs.
This shows that over 50% of new physical media sales in US were DVD as late at 2023. Bluray adoption is still not widespread and also the Bluray sales are even smaller when you consider people who use streaming services. Then you consider that when DVD was at its peak, streaming was not a competitor. This means that the number of total DVDs in circulation is much higher than Bluray. Collectors often buy from resellers. When people brag about their physical media collections, they are most likely on DVD, not Bluray.

i wonder if it's because bluray came along around the same time as internet streaming and internet piracy, so there are just way fewer bluray players out in the world.
