Can someone explain the concept of ‘breadtube’? Why is it called that and who are the main participants? Is it an actual community or several? Are they libs or leftist?
Breadtube is a bunch of western progressive liberal to somewhat leftist content creators, with likely a western chauvinist perspective
Eg. Worse side Vaush, Contrapoints,
Mid PhilosophyTube, Innuendo Studio, Hbomberguy
Tbh I think breadtube itself is kinda damned, due to its cooption to western capitalist liberal sensibility,
and it's all distinctly and noticeably white
Except f. d. signifier lol
Even then... he was the type to do a lesser evilism for Kamala (at least he, and the site now aligns at one priority to condemn Amerikkka)
I'd say Andrewism is one leg better, because while he publicly is an anarchist, he at least knows his own theory and praxis, un
And I recall that other guy - I think, Foreign Man in a Foreign Land
Those three I say are on the better spectrum of a Black Left media from Breadtube.
Western, white... Whatever they call themselves.
My biggest issue with western leftists is the constant defense of Amerikkka and it's people.
There was even a struggle session here recently where someone claimed that the US is still a vassal state of Europe, like the people living here aren't showing an overwhelming amount of support for every single terrible thing this country does.
That's a take? I thought we all agreed not only here but everywhere in the world Amerikkka is the unipolar hegemony over here?
~~I lied it was on Lemmygrad~~ It was hexbear
that's a hexbear thread and the user is a hexbear user
also holy shit 40 upvotes for that yankee victim shit
My bad Idk where I saw lemmygrad lmao
starting with gamergate and ending with the adpocalypse, there were a series of popular alt-right and fascist youtube channels dominating the political and commentary scene in youtube. in response some libs and leftists started making their own videos.
they weren't really popular until after the adpocalypse which i suspect youtube tweaked its algorithm to stop promoting racists. i guess the trump backlash helped too. anyway after that the video essay format and debunking videos really took off so a lot of people started making them. the most popular ones were grouped together as "BreadTube". it's a play on the name of the book conquest of bread. some of them were anarchists and socialists for sure but most of them were your average progressive. to me it always felt like an outsider label mocking them but people owned it and eventually a community formed around it.
today there's really no such thing as breadtube and it's almost certainly used as an insult every time. it's basically the equivalent of calling someone woke but on youtube.
the right wingers tanked and most of them have just stopped. as for breadtubers the good ones moved on to greener pastures or went on to produce high effort videos. the lazy ones kept leeching off that patreon money, and the worst ones pivoted to streaming and debating.
off the top of my head the most popular breadtubers were hbomberguy, three arrows, shaun, contrapoints, PhilosophyTube, innuendo studios, non compete, red mouse or something?, thought slime (im not sure if they were ever considered breadtube, good channel though).
there have been some late comers like vaush, destiny, adam something and lonerbox. and well look how great that turned out.
i've never met anyone who thinks those losers are breadtube
i don't know about destiny and adam something but vaush and lonerbox were definitely considered breadtube.
huh other than azov something's urbanism videos i never heard of any of them outside the context of them sucking. vaush was a known sex pest years before the incident. lonerbox i would've never heard of if bad empanada didn't make videos trashing him, and i guess destiny used to do starcraft but the political stuff was always centrist af and i don't understand people saying he was on the left other than his own lies.
Is this even true? The the most watched political channels on YouTube are chud/fascist ones.
the original ones did the current popular chuds are relatively new. im talking about people like sargon of akkad.
Anarchist writer Peter Kropotkin's foundational text is called Conquest of Bread, and so bread is a bit of a meme word for online anarchists. Breadtube is a community of anarchist and left liberal YouTubers who make content about theory, media, and YouTube drama.
There are a few actual communist YouTubers bunched in with them too. A lot of them are annoying libs, so people here are dismissive of the community.
Hbomberguy, Contrapoints, Shaun, Vaush, etc
I will object that the reason that I am dismissive of them is that a large number of them are actively hostile towards AES states, communist, and anarchist theory, with many of them spending their time misrepresenting our "tankie" positions and arguments, usually by repeating Western propaganda as if it is decided history that should inform our decisions.
The idea that any of us who consider ourselves anti-imperialist should view them as anything other than an overall hostile online entity is beyond me. I view it as yet another demonstration of overall lack of media literacy.
Some people claim it's because of the Bread Book, but it always read to me as either "bread and roses" or some general idea that social welfare (typified by feeding the hungry) is good.
peace, land, and breadtube
it was/is(?) a subreddit where liberal video essays got posted when video essays were becoming a thing done outside of film school ~2015/16
