Definitely not Epic? No idea where you got that. They downstall like Steam does. GOG and Itch, yes. I got Micro Mages off of itch and its a cool game.

A lot of games on Epic don’t have DRM (like GoG it’s developer opt in) so you can just launch the exe without opening Heroic

Same is true for games on Steam if the developer decides not to use Steam integration (some features like achievements are ok I think). For example Noita doesn't need Steam running, you can just copy the folder to another machine AFAIK

also there are Steam emulators

not entirely certain, but i think that applies to almost all steam features, not just achievements.

steam's DRM, is, afaik, entirely opt-in.

so it's entirely up to the, let's be real, publisher wether they want to use it or not.

(although, again, afaik...)
