If you read the rest of the article, she addresses that. She doesn't believe that she is personally brave enough to physically confront what is coming, so for her, the choice is get out now while she can and be vocal.
What a matter of fact way to express cowardice
Much better to be self aware of it and account for it, than to get yourself and others killed due to your false bravado.
It doesn't take much bravery to stand in a crowd with hundreds or thousands of other people.
Lol, you think this is going to end with just calmly standing in a crowd?
Statistically if the crowd is big enough it should end. But I kinda think if Trump kicks the bucket or lets Steven Miller have any more power, that getting out with my family will be necessary.
Probably not, but that's the most that's been asked of this lady so far and she couldn't even muster the courage to do that. Running away before you make any attempt to fight for all the people who made you who you are is some weak shit.
Lol she's an academic who has undoubtedly contributed to the body of historical knowledge on the this topic and has written this article which will reach tens of thousands of people, but you're calling her a coward who won't help fight fascism.... What have you done, exactly?
You sound naive. She studies dictators and she grew up in a neighbourhood of holocaust survivors. Teachers and their students are already being taken by ICE and it may become harder for targeted groups to find safety. This is not a question of "standing in a crowd".
I know what the situation is. Run away then if that's your plan, see how that works out for everybody else. But then, if you're the kind of person who would run then you never cared much for them to be begin with, or at least your care didn't translate into meaningful action on their behalf which is the same thing from a functional perspective.
Again, being aware of your own limitations and doing what you can is preferable to faking it, and falling apart when it counts.
Not everyone can be a super tough guy like you surely are.
It's not about being tough physically it's about deciding not to run away. I've seen pictures of 100 year old men, blind people, and folks in wheelchairs at these protests. If they can do it then an able bodied middle aged woman can too. She's choosing not to because she's afraid and that is the definition of cowardice whether you like it or not.
She has children. It's interesting that if you thought a full on dictators/ death camp regime was coming (as she does) you would either abandon your children or put them in harm's way, but judging other people for making a different choice does not make you seem all that righteous.
No one else in America has kids huh? Her kids are the only ones that matter in this equation. Get the fuck out of here with that GOP "but think of the children" logic
With her particular specialty and the attacks on education, I would put her in the grouping of likely to be targeted. Once that happens, it is probably too late to leave.
As far as going to protests, I've seen those pics too and they are truly inspiring to see! I have imagined that all have a support system, though I could be wrong. I'm currently unable to stand or walk for long periods and hoping I am able to fully recover. Until then, Im in a state we moved to as adults, haven't made any real local friends, don't have kids or other family in the area, work different hours in a different city than my S.O. We are also in a red county in a red state that posts in our neighborhood sites freely, about being violent to any non-magas. I.e., running into the protesters with lifted trucks, doing drive-bys of their 2a rights, and get cheered on from the others on there. I had to go far from home to one of our big cities to attempt to protest for a little bit just so I could feel safer with a crowd. Luckily I am still able to drive or even that wouldn't have been possible.
She is speaking up and bringing her expertise to those who can put the information to more strategic use. I will take all the help we can get.
Eh, my 78 year old aunt who uses two canes to get around because she refuses to use a walker has been to a few different protests this year in the deep red state of West Virginia. I get what you’re saying about limitations and maybe we’ll reach that point sooner or later but I don’t think we’re at the run away to save yourself part yet unless you’re an immigrant or trans.
I also understand wanting to get out before shit goes sideways but again, I don’t think we’re there yet. Maybe I’m wrong but I hope not.
What an armchair thing to say
I don't think that's true at all but even if it were, sitting in an armchair in America is more helpful than sitting in an armchair in Canada which is what this lady is doing.
It's quite a silly thing to get all high and mighty about. You don't have that person's life or thoughts/feelings.
It didn't sound high and mighty to me. She left a position of influence and (some small amount) of power just when shit is starting to get real. Fair weather patriot. Best of luck in Toronto. I'll stay here with the hundreds of millions for whom leaving isn't a viable option.
Uh ok
I don't need to know anything about this person to know that leaving is the cowards choice. She's telling everyone else who can't leave that they aren't as important and they have to sort this out without her. Don't try to spin that as some sort of noble act. We win together or we lose apart. I don't want to hear any lectures on history or morailty from people who would rather save themselves than help their fellow citizens.
You feeling personally attacked here isn't the person's fault, who, btw, I am not saying is doing something noble. Just pointing out how weird it is that you're acting this way about it.
You started this conversation by saying that I'm making armchair judgements about this person. If you understand how serious the situation is and you agree with what I've said about what our response should be then you should be annoyed with her for running away while preaching about the danger we're in too. If my house is on fire don't lecture me from a safe distance about how to spot the smoke earlier, grab a fucking bucket.
So your problem is mainly with her not shutting up? I am not annoyed. If I had the means I'd move to europe, and nothing is wrong with that at ALL.
Everything is wrong with that and if you don't see that then maybe I should move to Europe and leave you all to fend for yourselves. Your attitude of "fuck everyone else, I'm getting out of here" seems to be the prevailing sentiment in this thread and if that's the case then there's no point in fighting because you guys won't do shit for each other thinking like that.
Not everyone is the same. But I do believe if it were easy, like 20%-30% of americans would move tomorrow. Probably 10% would've in 2015, then Trump + republicans have accelerated the downfall like no other time afaik.
It's difficult to move to another country for so many reasons. Most people staying aren't some holier-than-thou keyboard warriors pretending to be super pure in all of their actions. They simply cannot leave for 17 reasons. But that doesn't mean we need to hate those who can... I don't know what gave you the idea that it's your place to tell others what their priorities have to be, but it's misguided af. Your message: "if you aren't collectivist to the point that you'd risk death, well then FUCK YOU".
Most of us have our limits, even if we wanted to be the type of person you require everyone to be to avoid being labelled a piece of shit. If you could easily move, you yourself I suspect might not be saying all of this shit. It's just easy to sit back and judge everyone by this ideal you have created as the minimum. Sad way of living, tbh
Oh stop making excuses for cowards. I'm tired of hearing it. You guys on Lemmy are supposed to be the principled people who think about the deeper problems facing society and are willing to make some sacrifices to solve those problems and even you are stumbling all over yourselves to justify throwing your morals away in favor of a few more years living as a refugee. This country was founded on the belief that fighting tyranny was worth dying for and if you've all abandoned those ideals to the point that you're willing to run away from an 80 year old fascist and his band of hillbilly supporters then America is already dead. You might as well give up now because you clearly don't have what it takes to fight at all, much less win.
No one really cares about your judgements.
As you sit in your armchair, couch warrior. Fucking cretin.
I'm here protesting and standing up to fascism and that's where I'll stay until this ends one way or another
You think you can call her a coward because you are protesting now? Oh boy, what you have now hardly qualifies as fascism. It aspires to be fascism, but it's so, so mild. That doesn't make you brave, that doesn't make you better than her. Unlike you, she knows what's coming next. I bet in 5 to 10 years, you'll find out that you aren't as brave as you thought.
Now who's the arm chair captain?
I'm well aware of the potential outcomes of this situation and if anything that makes her decision more cowardly. Every person that leaves is telling those who can't leave that their lives are less important, that I was on your side for as long as I believed it wouldn't cost me anything to say so. That's some fair-weather friend bullshit if I've ever heard it.
You can defend her decision if you like but I am choosing to stay and fight, whatever that ends up meaning, despite having the means and ability to leave and you will never convince me that that isn't the decision every truly patriotic American should be making too.
She has children. It’s interesting that if you thought a full on dictators/ death camp regime was coming (as she does) you would either abandon your children or put them in harm’s way, but judging other people for making a different choice does not make you seem all that righteous.
My sentiments exactly.
