You might have known about it without knowing the name, Keith Flint from the prodigy had one.
TIL the mo in Mohawk is short for mono. Holy fuck
Only in a backwards etymological way. It comes from the Mohawk people of modern New York (even though they mostly didn't sport that hairstyle, the association stuck anyway because of Hollywood)
And the “ro” in “Afro” is short for rohawk, which in turn is short for roundhawk, because its rounder than the monohawk.
Hawk comes from “haw cut”, “haircut”.
